Bolda the Bright lived in a Viking village by the sparkling blue water. Round little huts sat between bright green hills. Wild flowers grew on every rooftop. It was a pretty place. But today, something felt wrong.
Nobody was talking. Nobody was smiling. The villagers sat alone by their huts. Arms crossed. Faces grumpy. "Why is everyone so grumpy?" Bolda asked. No one answered. Not even a peep!
BZZZZZ! Down flew Buzzywhirl, her best friend. He was a giant insect with shiny green wings that whirred and clicked. "Buzzywhirl!" said Bolda. "Everyone is grumpy. What should we do?" Buzzywhirl wiggled his feelers. "When I feel grumpy," he buzzed, "I am usually hungry!"
Bolda gasped. "Hungry! That is it!" She looked at the big village garden. It was bursting with colorful fruits and vegetables. Red ones. Orange ones. Green ones. Purple ones! "Let us pick food and make a feast!" she said. "A feast for everyone!"
Into the garden they went! Bolda picked big red tomatoes. They were smooth and cool. Sniff, sniff! They smelled like sunshine. "Red food is good for your heart!" said Bolda. She put them in her basket. Plop, plop, plop!
Buzzywhirl found long orange carrots. He pulled them up with his little legs. Pop, pop, pop! Out they came, covered in soft brown dirt. "Orange food helps your eyes see far!" buzzed Buzzywhirl. He could see all the way across the fjord!
Next, Bolda found round green cabbages. They were big and bumpy. Crunch, crunch! "Green food makes your bones strong!" she said. Then Buzzywhirl spotted fat purple beets. They were squishy and smelled sweet like the earth. "Purple food helps your brain think!" he buzzed.
They carried all the food to the long wooden table outside. Bolda washed the vegetables. Splash, splash! Buzzywhirl stirred a big pot with his wings. Whirrrr! The soup bubbled. It smelled warm and yummy. Can you guess what colors were in the soup? Red, orange, green, and purple!
The yummy smell floated through the village. One grumpy villager lifted his nose. Sniff, sniff. Then another. Sniff, sniff, sniff! Slowly, one by one, they walked toward the long wooden table. "What smells so good?" someone grumbled. "Rainbow soup!" said Bolda. "Come sit with us!"
The villagers sat down together. They slurped the warm, colorful soup. Slurp, slurp, slurp! Something magical happened. The grumpy faces softened. Mouths smiled. Eyes twinkled. "This is really good!" said one villager. "Pass me more, please!" said another. They began to talk. And then—they began to laugh!
Buzzywhirl landed on the table and did a happy dance. His shiny green wings sparkled in the golden sun. "See?" he buzzed softly to Bolda. "A good meal is like a key. It opens people up." Bolda nodded. "When you share food, you share kindness. And strangers become friends."
That night, the village hummed with happy voices and full bellies. Bolda the Bright walked to the edge of the water. The fjord sparkled under the first tiny stars. Somewhere across those hills, there were more villages. More empty tables. More people who needed a friend. Bolda smiled. Tomorrow, she would find them.
