In a bright, colorful kingdom called Doodleland, there lived a curious, mischievous king named King Doodle Bum. He wore a golden crown on his head and had chocolate smudges on his cheeks—because he LOVED chocolate more than anything. Well, almost anything.
King Doodle Bum also loved sports! One sunny morning, he saw a sign on the royal sports field. It said: DOODLELAND KICKBALL TEAM — ALL ARE WELCOME! "Oh boy!" said King Doodle Bum. "I am going to be the BEST kickball player ever!"
His best friend Buzzywhirl buzzed over. Buzzywhirl was a giant, clever insect with shiny wings and bright goggles on her head. She loved tinkering with gears and gadgets in her little tinker-shed. "A kickball team?" said Buzzywhirl. "Let's join together!"
On the day of the big game, the wooden bleachers were packed with friendly woodland creatures—rabbits, squirrels, and little foxes, all clapping and cheering. The bouncy green field was ready. The cheerful banners waved. It was time to play!
The game began! King Doodle Bum ran to kick the big, cherry-red ball. "I will kick it!" he said. Then he ran to catch it. "I will catch it too!" Then he tried to run ALL the bases by himself. "I can do everything!" he shouted.
Buzzywhirl and the other teammates stood and waited. Nobody got to kick. Nobody got to catch. Nobody got to run. "King Doodle Bum," called Buzzywhirl, "we want to play too!" But King Doodle Bum did not hear her. He wanted to be the star.
Then came the big kick. King Doodle Bum ran up to the cherry-red ball. He swung his foot as hard as he could and—WHOOSH—he missed! He tumbled and fell right onto the soft, bouncy grass. The crowd went quiet. King Doodle Bum's lip wobbled. "I messed up," he whispered. "Everyone saw."
Buzzywhirl buzzed over and sat beside him. "Hey," she said softly. "Everyone makes mistakes. Even kings! The important thing is to keep trying." She put one of her little legs on his shoulder. "And you know what else? You do not have to do it all alone. That is what teammates are for."
King Doodle Bum wiped his eyes and thought about it. "You mean... I can ask for help?" "Of course!" said Buzzywhirl. "When you cheer for your friends, they feel brave. When you pass the ball, everyone gets to shine. A team works best when everyone plays together."
King Doodle Bum took a deep breath. He stood up and dusted off his robe. "Okay, team!" he called. "Let's play TOGETHER!" This time, he passed the cherry-red ball to Buzzywhirl. She kicked it high into the sky! He cheered, "Great kick, Buzzywhirl!" And when it was his turn again, he tried his best—and this time, he kicked it too!
The teammates laughed, cheered, and high-fived. They kicked and caught and ran together. Nobody had to be perfect. When someone missed, the team said, "Good try! You will get it next time!" It was the most fun game Doodleland had ever seen. Even the little foxes in the bleachers danced!
After the game, King Doodle Bum sat in the grass eating a piece of chocolate. Buzzywhirl sat beside him, tinkering with a little gear. "Buzzywhirl," he said, "I cannot wait for the next game." "Because you want to win?" she asked. King Doodle Bum smiled. "No. Because I get to play with my friends."
