Cactus Cody, a young cowboy wearing a large tan cowboy hat, a red bandana, a brown leather vest over a blue shirt, and dusty brown boots, stands tall with his hands on his hips, smiling confidently. In the background, a wide sun-golden desert with tall green saguaro cacti and a small wooden frontier town.

Cactus Cody lived in a little town at the edge of a wide, sun-golden desert. He wore a big cowboy hat and dusty boots, and everyone said he was the bravest cowboy around. Cody loved riding his horse, Starshine, through the sand and the wind.

Buzzywhirl, a large bright-green beetle-like insect with shimmery translucent wings, big round orange eyes, and a tiny brown leather tool belt around his middle, stands in the doorway of a large hollowed-out saguaro cactus workshop, holding a small wrench. In the background, warm golden lantern light spilling out from inside the hollowed-out cactus workshop.

Cody's best friend was a giant insect named Buzzywhirl. Buzzywhirl was curious and clever, and he loved to tinker. He lived in a tiny workshop built inside a big hollowed-out cactus. It glowed with warm, flickering lantern light.

Cactus Cody, a young cowboy wearing a large tan cowboy hat, a red bandana, a brown leather vest over a blue shirt, and dusty brown boots, rides on a white horse with a shining silver mane and tail, galloping along a dusty desert trail. In the background, rolling tumbleweeds, tall green saguaro cacti, and a bright golden sky.

One morning, Cody and Buzzywhirl rode out on the dusty trail together. They galloped past tumbling tumbleweeds. They raced past tall saguaro cacti. The desert was big and bright, and the two friends felt happy and free.

A dusty trail splitting into two paths, with the new narrow trail curving downward between towering reddish-brown canyon walls that cast deep purple shadows, mysterious and dark. In the background, the bright sun-golden desert behind, contrasting with the shadowy canyon ahead.

Then Cody pulled on the reins. "Whoa, Starshine!" he said. Up ahead, a new trail split off from the path. It curved down into a deep, dark canyon. The rocks were tall and cast long shadows. No one in their little town had ever explored it.

Cactus Cody, a young cowboy wearing a large tan cowboy hat, a red bandana, a brown leather vest over a blue shirt, and dusty brown boots, sits on his white horse with a shining silver mane and tail, gripping the reins tightly, his face showing worry as he looks toward something ahead. In the background, the entrance to a deep shadowy canyon with towering reddish-brown canyon walls.

Cody stared at the dark canyon. He felt something funny in his belly. It was tight, like a knot. His hands felt a little shaky on the reins. "I should go in," Cody whispered. "Brave cowboys aren't scared." But the knot in his belly did not go away.

Buzzywhirl, a large bright-green beetle-like insect with shimmery translucent wings buzzing in a blur, big round orange eyes wide with worry, and a tiny brown leather tool belt around his middle, perches on a sandy-colored rock. In the background, the entrance to a deep shadowy canyon with towering reddish-brown canyon walls.

Buzzywhirl landed on a rock next to Cody. His wings were buzzing very, very fast. "Cody," said Buzzywhirl, "my wings always buzz faster when I am nervous. And right now, they are buzzing so fast I can barely sit still." He looked down. "I think I am scared too."

Buzzywhirl, a large bright-green beetle-like insect with shimmery translucent wings, big round orange eyes looking gentle and kind, and a tiny brown leather tool belt around his middle, gestures with one tiny leg as if explaining something important. In the background, a sun-golden desert with tall green saguaro cacti under a warm sky.

Cody blinked. "You're scared? But you're the cleverest bug I know!" Buzzywhirl smiled a little. "Being clever doesn't mean I don't feel afraid," he said. "Everyone feels fear. Even brave cowboys. Even clever bugs. Fear is something that happens to all of us."

Cactus Cody, a young cowboy wearing a large tan cowboy hat, a red bandana, a brown leather vest over a blue shirt, and dusty brown boots, sits on a flat sandy-colored rock, looking thoughtful with his hands resting on his knees. In the background, the dusty trail and the white horse with a shining silver mane and tail standing nearby.

Cody climbed down from Starshine. He sat on a flat rock by the trail. Buzzywhirl sat next to him. "What are you afraid of?" Buzzywhirl asked softly. Cody thought for a moment. "I don't know what's in there," he said. "I'm afraid of what I can't see. I'm afraid I won't know what to do."

A large tan cowboy hat and a tiny brown leather tool belt sitting side by side on a flat sandy-colored rock, touched by warm golden sunlight. In the background, the dusty trail leading toward the shadowy canyon entrance between towering reddish-brown canyon walls.

"That's okay," said Buzzywhirl. "It's okay to be afraid of what we don't know. You just did something really brave, Cody. You named your fear. You said it out loud. When you can say what scares you, the feeling gets a little smaller." Cody took a deep, slow breath. The knot in his belly did feel a little looser.

Buzzywhirl, a large bright-green beetle-like insect with shimmery translucent wings, big round orange eyes looking warm and reassuring, and a tiny brown leather tool belt around his middle, shakes his head gently while hovering in the air. In the background, a wide sun-golden desert with tall green saguaro cacti and rolling tumbleweeds.

"Do we have to go in today?" Cody asked. Buzzywhirl shook his head. "We don't have to do anything today. We can go tomorrow. Or next week. Or we can bring more friends to come with us. Asking for help is one of the bravest things anyone can do." Cody smiled. "I like that idea."

Cactus Cody, a young cowboy wearing a large tan cowboy hat, a red bandana, a brown leather vest over a blue shirt, and dusty brown boots, walks alongside his white horse with a shining silver mane and tail, looking peaceful and relieved, a small smile on his face. In the background, the dusty trail winding through the sun-golden desert with tall green saguaro cacti.

So the two friends did not go into the canyon that day. And that was perfectly okay. They turned Starshine around and walked slowly back along the dusty trail. Cody felt lighter. The knot in his belly was almost gone. He had shared his worries, and he did not have to carry them all alone.

A wide sun-golden desert sunset sky streaked with brilliant orange, soft pink, and warm gold, with the silhouette of towering reddish-brown canyon walls in the distance and tall green saguaro cacti dotting the landscape. In the background, the deep shadowy canyon silhouetted against the brilliant sunset sky.

That evening, Cody and Buzzywhirl sat together on a hill and watched the sunset paint the sky in orange, pink, and gold. The canyon was still out there, quiet and waiting. It would be there tomorrow and the day after that. And when they were ready—truly ready—they would explore it together.
