Welcome to Tumbleweed Flats! It is a sunny desert town with tall cacti and red fences. Today is a big day. Colorful banners wave in the warm breeze. The Partner Rodeo is here at last!
Cactus Cody walks into the rodeo arena. He wears his favorite brown cowboy hat and shiny silver boots. "Yee-haw!" says Cody. "I love rodeo day! I can't wait to ride fast and rope hard!" He tips his hat to the crowd.
Buzz, buzz, buzz! Here comes Buzzywhirl! She is a giant green insect with big sparkly wings and goggles on her head. She carries a little toolbox everywhere she goes. "I signed us up, Cody!" she says. "We are a team!"
The Partner Rodeo has three parts. First, ride fast around the barrels. Next, toss a rope around a post. Last, solve a silly trail puzzle! "Teams work together," says a friendly announcer. "Help each other and do your best!"
Ready, set, go! Cactus Cody rides fast on his brown horse. Clip-clop, clip-clop! He zooms around the big blue barrels. "Ride, Cody, ride!" cheers Buzzywhirl. Cody is a great rider. He grins from ear to ear.
Now it is Buzzywhirl's turn at the barrels. She runs on her six legs, but — whoops! Trip, tumble, bonk! Her long legs get all tangled up. "Oh no!" says Buzzywhirl. She falls near a big blue barrel. The other teams zoom ahead.
Next comes the rope toss. Cody swings his golden lasso around and around. Whoosh — he throws! But the rope flies the wrong way. He tries again. Miss! "I can't do it," Cody says with a frown. "We are falling behind. Maybe we should just quit."
Buzzywhirl puts a leg on Cody's shoulder. "Wait, Cody," she says. "Good teammates don't quit. They help each other! When something is hard, take a big breath and try a new way." Cody looks at her. He takes a deep breath in and blows it out slow.
"I have an idea!" says Buzzywhirl. She opens her small red toolbox and pulls out a grippy glove. "Hold the rope like this — with three fingers on top." Cody tries her way. Whoosh — the golden lasso loops right around the post! "I did it!" cheers Cody.
"Now let me help you!" says Cody. He shows Buzzywhirl how to step one leg at a time, nice and steady. "Slow and smooth," he says. "Don't rush." Step, step, step! Buzzywhirl moves around the big blue barrels without tripping. "We did it together!" she cheers.
At the trail puzzle, Buzzywhirl is a star! She uses her clever mind to solve every riddle. Click, clack, snap! They finish the race together. They do not win first place, but they cross the finish line with big, big smiles. They clap and cheer loudly for the winning team.
Cody and Buzzywhirl sit on the red fence and watch the sun set over Tumbleweed Flats. "You know what?" says Cody. "We didn't get a shiny ribbon. But I feel really, really good." Buzzywhirl nods. "That's because we helped each other. And that is the best feeling of all." Cody smiles. "Same team next year?" Buzzywhirl bumps him with her wing. "Same team forever."
