Cactus Cody lives on a sunny ranch. He has a little red barn and a big green pasture. Cody loves his horse. He loves the warm desert sun. Today feels different. Something new is here!
Blinky Sparx rolls up the cactus-dotted path. Blink, blink, blink go his sparkly lights! "Cody! Cody!" says Blinky. "Did you hear? A tiny new baby is here!"
Cody and Blinky peek inside the warm, glowing home. There she is! A tiny, tiny baby. She is so small. She is Cody's new sister. "Ohhh," whispers Cody. "She is little."
But then the baby cries. WAAAH! WAAAH! The house is loud. Mama holds the baby close. Mama is very busy. Cody stands in the corner. He feels a little unsure.
Cody walks outside. He sits by the little red barn. "Everything is different," says Cody. His horse nuzzles his hand. That feels nice. But Cody is still a little sad.
Blinky Sparx rolls over. Blink, blink, blink. "Cody, are you okay?" asks Blinky. "I feel funny," says Cody. "Mama is so busy. Is there room for me?" Blinky's lights glow warm and soft.
"Your heart is so big, Cody," says Blinky. "Love does not get smaller. It grows and grows! There is room for Mama. Room for the baby. Room for you. Room for everyone!" Can you put your hands on YOUR heart? Feel how big it is!
Cody smiles. "Maybe I can help!" He tiptoes inside. The baby is fussy. Cody finds her soft pink blanket with the little yellow star. He brings it to Mama. "Thank you, Cody," says Mama. "You are such a good helper."
The baby is still fussy. What can Cody do? He sings a soft, gentle song. "Hush, hush, little one. The stars will come soon." The baby listens. She gets quiet. Shhhhh. Singing softly can help a baby feel safe.
Blinky shows Cody how to touch the baby gently. "Soft, soft, soft," says Blinky. Cody uses one gentle finger. He touches her tiny hand. Can you show me a gentle touch? Soft, soft, soft. The baby holds Cody's finger tight!
Night comes to the ranch. The stars come out, one by one. Cody holds his sister's tiny hand under the big, bright sky. She is so small. He is her big brother. That is a very important job.
Some days will be hard. The baby will cry. Mama will be busy. But some days will be wonderful. There will be laughing and songs and tiny fingers holding on tight. Love only grows bigger. Tomorrow is a brand new day on the ranch, and Cody cannot wait.
