Cactus Cody was a brave little cowboy. He lived in a cozy cabin on a sunny ranch. Golden hills rolled all around. The sky was big and blue. Cody loved his ranch more than anything.
Every day, Cody rode his horse Biscuit. Clip-clop, clip-clop! They galloped past the red fence. They raced up the golden hills. They splashed through puddles. What a team!
But one morning, Cody woke up and heard — drip, drip, drip. Rain! Big, fat raindrops tapped on the cabin roof. Tap, tap, tap. Cody looked out the window. He could not go outside. "I am so bored," Cody sighed.
Cody sat in the creaky rocking chair. Creak, creak. He rocked back and forth. Then he saw something. A dusty, sparkly bookshelf stood in the corner. The colorful books on it began to glow! "Whoa," whispered Cody.
Cody tiptoed closer. One book glowed brighter than the rest. It was green and gold and covered in dust. He picked it up. Sniff, sniff. It smelled like warm cookies! "Biscuit, come look!" Cody called. Biscuit poked his big spotted head right through the cabin window.
Cody opened the book. WHOOOOSH! Wind swirled around them. The cabin disappeared! Suddenly, Cody and Biscuit stood in a big, green jungle. Tall trees reached up, up, up. Leaves as big as blankets dripped with rain. STOMP, STOMP, STOMP! A friendly dinosaur walked right by! "A dinosaur!" Cody cheered. "Books can take you ANYWHERE!"
Cody turned the page. WHOOOOSH! Now they were in a splashy blue ocean! Waves rocked all around. Biscuit floated on a big red raft. Splash, splash! Then up came a huge whale. The whale looked at them and — giggled! "Hee hee hee!" Can you giggle like a whale?
Cody turned another page. WHOOOOSH! Now they floated up, up, up into a starry sky. Tiny stars twinkled all around. The big, round moon had a smiley face! "Hey, little cowboy," said the moon. "Why did the star go to school? To get a little BRIGHTER!" Cody and Biscuit laughed and laughed.
Then — WHOOOOSH — they were back in the cabin. Drip, drip, drip. The rain still tapped on the roof. But Cody did not feel bored anymore. His heart felt big and full. "Biscuit," he said softly, "we went to a jungle, an ocean, AND the sky. All from one book!"
Cody looked at the sparkly bookshelf full of colorful books. So many more adventures! He had a big idea. "When you feel stuck or bored," he told Biscuit, "you can pick up a book and go anywhere." Biscuit nodded his big spotted head. Even just one page can take you someplace new.
Then Cody heard it. Drip… drip… nothing. The rain stopped! A beam of warm sunshine peeked through the window. The golden hills glowed outside. Biscuit whinnied. They could go ride again! Cody looked at the door. He looked at the book. He smiled a big cowboy smile.
Cody sat back down. He opened the glowing green and gold book to a brand new page. Biscuit rested his soft, warm nose on Cody's shoulder. "We still have one more adventure to find," Cody whispered. And he turned the page.
