Flicker Sparkleaf was a little elf who loved adventures. She loved to run. She loved to climb. She loved to jump and spin! But today, the forest glade was getting quiet. The soft glowing mushrooms dimmed their light. The pastel-colored trees began to hum a gentle song.
"Nap time, Flicker," hummed the trees. But Flicker shook her head. "No, no, no!" she said. "I am NOT sleepy. There is too much to see! Too much to do!" She tiptoed away from her fluffy moss bed.
Flicker skipped down the mossy path. She found a patch of golden butterflies. Their wings sparkled in the soft light. "Come play with me!" Flicker said. But the butterflies were folding their wings. Slowly... slowly... closed.
"Shhh," whispered one golden butterfly. "We rest now so our wings grow strong. When we wake up, we will fly even higher!" The butterflies took a slow, deep breath in... and a long breath out. Can you take a slow deep breath too?
Flicker hopped along to the little pond. Splish, splash! Three round green frogs sat on smooth, cool stones. "Come splash with me!" said Flicker. But the frogs were closing their big, sleepy eyes.
"Ribbit," yawned one round green frog. "Napping makes us feel so good. When we wake up, we will jump even higher! Try it — close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath." The frogs tucked in their little legs and got very still.
Flicker scrambled up a soft hill. At the top, two fluffy white bunnies sat in a warm patch of clover. "Come hop with me!" said Flicker. But the bunnies yawned big yawns. Their little pink noses wiggled.
"Rest now, Flicker," one fluffy white bunny whispered. "Napping gives us energy for bigger adventures when we wake up!" The bunnies snuggled close. They took a slow breath in... and a long breath out. Soon they were warm and still.
Flicker looked up at the sky. Even the puffy clouds were settling down! One ticklish cloud giggled softly — "Hee hee hee!" — then yawned a big, quiet yawn. "The wind is rocking me to sleep," it whispered. "Even clouds need rest."
Flicker walked slowly back to her fluffy moss bed. The golden butterflies were sleeping. The round green frogs were sleeping. The fluffy white bunnies were sleeping. Even the ticklish cloud was sleeping! Maybe... napping was not so bad.
Flicker climbed into her soft, green moss bed. It smelled like warm rain and sweet clover. She pulled a tiny leaf blanket up to her chin. She took one slow, deep breath in... and out. Two slow breaths... in... and out. Three slow breaths... in... and out. Her eyes closed. The trees hummed their lullaby. And Flicker drifted off to sleep.
When Flicker woke up, she stretched her arms wide. She felt strong. She felt happy. The forest was bright again. The golden butterflies danced in the air. The round green frogs jumped high, high, high! Flicker's eyes sparkled with wonder. "What adventure is next?" she whispered — and her little feet were already running.
