Every sunny morning, Grace put on her favorite shoes and ran to the park. The big green grassy field was her stage. The birds were her music. And the whole world was her dance floor.
Grace loved to dance more than anything. She twirled past the sandbox with its colorful buckets and shovels. She spun along the winding stone path lined with wildflowers. Twirl, spin, twirl!
She leaped across the big green grassy field. She wiggled by the red-and-yellow playground with its curvy slides. "Look at me!" Grace giggled. "I am a dancing star!" Twirl, spin, leap!
But today, as Grace twirled past a tall oak tree, she stopped. A little boy sat on the grass all by himself. His chin rested in his hands. He was not smiling. He was not playing. He just sat very still.
Grace walked over to the little boy. "What is wrong?" she asked softly. The boy pointed up. High in the tall oak tree, a bright red kite with a long blue tail was tangled in the branches. "My kite is stuck," he said. "I cannot get it down."
Grace wanted to keep dancing. But she looked at the boy's sad face and knew what to do. Sometimes the kindest thing is to stop and help. "I have an idea!" said Grace. She called to a friendly grown-up sitting on a nearby bench. "Can you help us, please?"
The friendly grown-up came to help. Grace held the long string tight while the grown-up reached up and gently pulled the bright red kite free from the branches. "You did it!" cheered the boy. His face lit up with a big, happy smile. "Thank you, Grace!"
Grace waved goodbye and started to dance again. Twirl, spin, twirl! But then she saw something else. A shy girl with pigtails sat near the sandbox with the colorful buckets and shovels. Her crackers were spilled on the ground. Her eyes looked watery and red.
Grace stopped her dancing once more. She sat down right next to the shy girl. "Are you okay?" Grace asked in a gentle voice. The girl shook her head. "I dropped my snack," she whispered. "Now I have nothing to eat." When you see someone who is sad, just sitting beside them can help.
Grace reached into her little bag and pulled out her own pack of crackers. "Here," she said with a warm smile. "We can share!" The shy girl looked up. A tiny smile grew on her face. "Really?" she asked. "Really!" said Grace. They sat together and munched the crackers, crunch, crunch, crunch.
"Do you want to dance with me?" Grace asked. The shy girl nodded. Then the boy with the bright red kite came running over. "Can I dance too?" he called. "Yes!" Grace laughed. All three children held hands and danced across the big green grassy field. Twirl, spin, leap! Twirl, spin, leap!
As the warm sun climbed higher, Grace felt something glowing inside her chest. It was bigger than any twirl. It was warmer than any spin. It was the happy feeling you get when you help someone. Grace looked out at the park and wondered, "Who might I help tomorrow?"
