Grace loved to dance. She danced in the morning. She danced in the afternoon. She danced at night before bed. If there was music, Grace would move. If there was no music, Grace would move anyway!
Grace would spin by the sofa. She would wiggle by the window. She would hop around the soft, colorful pillows on the floor. The sunny patterns on the rug were like a little stage, and Grace was the star of every show.
But when it was story time, Grace did not want to stop. "Come sit with me," said her big sister, holding up a book. "No, no, no!" said Grace, shaking her head. "I want to dance!" She kicked her feet and spun away.
Her big sister tried every day. She held up books with trains. She held up books with cats. She held up books with stars. But Grace would wiggle and jiggle and dance right past them all. Sitting still was just too hard!
One afternoon, her big sister had an idea. She pulled a brand-new book off the big wooden bookshelf. The cover showed a big, fluffy bear dancing on its tippy-toes. "I think this one is special," she whispered with a smile.
Her big sister began to read. "Once there was a bear who loved to dance. The bear would stomp, stomp, stomp through the forest." Grace stopped spinning. She looked at her sister. She looked at the book. Then she stomped her feet — stomp, stomp, stomp!
"The bear twirled in the rain," her big sister read. Grace twirled too! "The bear leaped over a log." Grace leaped over a soft pillow! The words in the book were making her body move. The story was becoming a dance!
Grace danced every page. When the bear was slow, she swayed gently. When the bear was fast, she bounced and clapped. She did not have to sit perfectly still. She could listen and move at the same time! Sometimes, finding your own way to enjoy a story is the best way to start.
When the story ended, Grace ran to the sofa. "Again! Again!" she said, clapping her little hands. Her big sister laughed and read it again. And then again. Three times they read the dancing bear book that day!
That night, Grace tugged on her big sister's hand. "Book?" she asked, her eyes wide and bright. Her sister smiled. "Let's find one you will love." They looked at the big wooden bookshelf together. When you find a book about something you love, reading feels like magic.
They found a book about a bird who danced in the clouds. They found a book about a fish who danced in the waves. Every night, Grace asked for a new story. And every night, the words made her imagination dance in wonderful new places.
Grace still loved to dance — she always would. But now, even after her feet were still, the stories kept going inside her mind. They spun and leaped and twirled in her dreams. And tomorrow night, there would be a whole new book waiting on the shelf.
