Hansel and Gretel stand side by side in front of a small wooden cottage at the edge of a dark tangled forest, holding hands. Hansel holds a piece of bread in his free hand. The sky is dusky and the trees loom tall behind them. In the background, a dense dark forest with twisted branches and a narrow dirt path leading into the woods.

Hansel and Gretel lived in a small house near a big, dark forest. They loved each other very much. Hansel always shared his bread with Gretel, and Gretel always held Hansel's hand when the wind howled at night.

Hansel walks ahead on a narrow forest trail, dropping breadcrumbs from a piece of bread, while Gretel follows close behind him. Tall dark trees with twisted tangled branches surround them on both sides. In the background, a shadowy tangled forest with gnarled trees and faint light filtering through the canopy.

One day, they walked deep into the tangled forest to look for berries. The trees were tall and thick. The branches twisted together like knotted fingers. "Stay close," said Hansel. "I will drop breadcrumbs so we can find our way home." Crumb, crumb, crumb — he left a trail behind them.

Hansel and Gretel stand together on the forest trail looking behind them at the empty path. Two small birds peck at the ground nearby. Gretel looks worried and Hansel holds her hand tightly. In the background, the dark forest path stretches into shadow with no breadcrumbs visible.

But when the sun began to set, Hansel looked back. The breadcrumbs were gone! Hungry birds had eaten every single one. "Oh no!" said Gretel. "How will we get home?" Hansel squeezed her hand. "We will figure it out together," he said bravely.

Hansel and Gretel walk through the dark forest together, both tilting their noses up to sniff the air. Swirls of sweet-smelling steam drift through the trees ahead of them. Gretel points forward excitedly. In the background, thick dark trees thin out to reveal a faint warm glow ahead.

They walked and walked. Then Gretel sniffed the air. "Do you smell that?" she asked. It smelled sweet — like sugar and chocolate and warm cake. They followed the smell through the trees until they found something amazing.

Hansel and Gretel stand in front of the candy-coated cottage, gazing up in wonder. The cottage has brown gingerbread walls with white frosting trim, a roof covered in colorful candies, gumdrop windowsills, and a striped candy cane fence. Hansel bites into a piece of candy cane he has broken off. In the background, the dark forest surrounds the small bright clearing where the cottage sits.

There it was — a cottage made of gingerbread! The walls were brown and covered in white frosting. The roof was lined with colorful candy. Gumdrops dotted the windowsills, and a candy cane fence wrapped around the yard. "It's a candy house!" cried Hansel. He broke off a piece of the candy cane fence and took a big bite.

The Gingerbread Witch stands in the open doorway of the candy-coated cottage, leaning forward with a crooked smile and beckoning hands. Hansel looks eager while Gretel stands slightly behind him, arms crossed, looking cautious and uneasy. In the background, the inside of the cottage glows warmly with the light of a steaming oven visible behind the Gingerbread Witch.

The door creaked open. Out came the Gingerbread Witch. She had a crooked smile and wore a brown dress covered in frosting-white swirls. "Welcome, dear children!" she said in a sugary voice. "Come inside. I have warm soup and soft beds for you." She seemed so kind. But Gretel felt something was not right. Her tummy told her to be careful.

Inside the candy-coated cottage, Hansel grips the bars of a large cage made of thick candy sticks, looking frightened. The Gingerbread Witch stands nearby rubbing her hands together with a wicked grin. Gretel stands across the room holding a tiny crust of bread, her eyes wide but determined. In the background, the steaming oven glows with orange light, and the cottage walls are decorated with candy and frosting.

Inside, the Gingerbread Witch fed Hansel plate after plate of food. "Eat, eat, my boy!" she said. But she gave Gretel only a tiny crust. Then the Gingerbread Witch locked Hansel in a big cage made of candy sticks! "When you are nice and plump, I will bake you into a gingerbread boy!" she cackled. Hansel grabbed the bars. "Gretel, help me!" he cried.

Hansel reaches a thin chicken bone through the bars of the candy stick cage toward the Gingerbread Witch, who squints and pinches it with her fingers, scowling. Gretel peeks from behind a gingerbread pillar in the cottage, thinking hard with one finger on her chin. In the background, shelves of candy jars and frosted walls inside the cottage.

Every day, the Gingerbread Witch said, "Hold out your finger, boy! Let me feel if you are fat enough." But clever Hansel held out a thin chicken bone instead! The Gingerbread Witch could not see well. "Still too skinny!" she grumbled. This trick gave Gretel time to think of a plan. When someone tries to trick you, it is okay to be clever right back.

Gretel stands near the large steaming oven inside the candy-coated cottage, looking up at the Gingerbread Witch with a calm but alert expression. The Gingerbread Witch gestures impatiently toward the open oven door, which glows bright orange inside. In the background, the candy stick cage with Hansel watching anxiously through the bars.

One morning, the Gingerbread Witch got tired of waiting. "Light the oven, girl!" she snapped at Gretel. "Climb in and check if it is hot enough." Gretel's heart beat fast. But she took a deep breath and stayed calm. If you ever feel scared, take a breath and think before you act. "I do not know how," said Gretel. "Can you show me?"

Gretel pushes the heavy oven door shut with both hands, her face fierce and determined. Hansel cheers from inside the candy stick cage in the corner, gripping the bars with a big relieved smile. In the background, the glowing interior of the candy-coated cottage with frosted walls and candy decorations.

The Gingerbread Witch huffed. "Silly girl! You just lean in, like this!" She bent forward and stuck her head into the big oven. Quick as a flash, brave Gretel pushed the oven door shut — CLANG! The Gingerbread Witch was trapped inside her own oven. "You did it!" shouted Hansel from the cage. "You outsmarted her, Gretel!"

Hansel and Gretel hug each other tightly inside the candy-coated cottage, both smiling with relief and joy. The open candy stick cage stands empty behind them. A small golden key dangles from a candy hook on the wall nearby. In the background, the oven door is shut tight and the cottage interior glows warmly.

Gretel found the key hanging on a candy hook and unlocked the cage. Hansel rushed out and hugged her tight. "You saved me!" he said. "You were so brave and so smart." Gretel smiled. "We are a team," she said. "I will always look out for you, and you will always look out for me." They filled their pockets with the witch's treasure and left the gingerbread cottage behind.

Hansel and Gretel walk hand in hand out of the dark tangled forest into bright golden sunlight, smiling joyfully. Gretel holds a small stick in her free hand. Their small wooden cottage is visible just ahead at the edge of the trees. In the background, the dark forest gives way to a sunlit meadow with their small house and a blue sky with soft clouds.

Hansel and Gretel walked through the forest hand in hand. This time, Gretel marked the trees with little scratches so they would not get lost. Soon they saw their little house through the trees. They ran to the door, laughing. The world still had dark forests and tricky paths ahead. But together, they knew they could face anything.
