Hansel and Gretel lived in a small house near a big, dark forest. They loved each other very much. Hansel always shared his bread with Gretel, and Gretel always held Hansel's hand when the wind howled at night.
One day, they walked deep into the tangled forest to look for berries. The trees were tall and thick. The branches twisted together like knotted fingers. "Stay close," said Hansel. "I will drop breadcrumbs so we can find our way home." Crumb, crumb, crumb — he left a trail behind them.
But when the sun began to set, Hansel looked back. The breadcrumbs were gone! Hungry birds had eaten every single one. "Oh no!" said Gretel. "How will we get home?" Hansel squeezed her hand. "We will figure it out together," he said bravely.
They walked and walked. Then Gretel sniffed the air. "Do you smell that?" she asked. It smelled sweet — like sugar and chocolate and warm cake. They followed the smell through the trees until they found something amazing.
There it was — a cottage made of gingerbread! The walls were brown and covered in white frosting. The roof was lined with colorful candy. Gumdrops dotted the windowsills, and a candy cane fence wrapped around the yard. "It's a candy house!" cried Hansel. He broke off a piece of the candy cane fence and took a big bite.
The door creaked open. Out came the Gingerbread Witch. She had a crooked smile and wore a brown dress covered in frosting-white swirls. "Welcome, dear children!" she said in a sugary voice. "Come inside. I have warm soup and soft beds for you." She seemed so kind. But Gretel felt something was not right. Her tummy told her to be careful.
Inside, the Gingerbread Witch fed Hansel plate after plate of food. "Eat, eat, my boy!" she said. But she gave Gretel only a tiny crust. Then the Gingerbread Witch locked Hansel in a big cage made of candy sticks! "When you are nice and plump, I will bake you into a gingerbread boy!" she cackled. Hansel grabbed the bars. "Gretel, help me!" he cried.
Every day, the Gingerbread Witch said, "Hold out your finger, boy! Let me feel if you are fat enough." But clever Hansel held out a thin chicken bone instead! The Gingerbread Witch could not see well. "Still too skinny!" she grumbled. This trick gave Gretel time to think of a plan. When someone tries to trick you, it is okay to be clever right back.
One morning, the Gingerbread Witch got tired of waiting. "Light the oven, girl!" she snapped at Gretel. "Climb in and check if it is hot enough." Gretel's heart beat fast. But she took a deep breath and stayed calm. If you ever feel scared, take a breath and think before you act. "I do not know how," said Gretel. "Can you show me?"
The Gingerbread Witch huffed. "Silly girl! You just lean in, like this!" She bent forward and stuck her head into the big oven. Quick as a flash, brave Gretel pushed the oven door shut — CLANG! The Gingerbread Witch was trapped inside her own oven. "You did it!" shouted Hansel from the cage. "You outsmarted her, Gretel!"
Gretel found the key hanging on a candy hook and unlocked the cage. Hansel rushed out and hugged her tight. "You saved me!" he said. "You were so brave and so smart." Gretel smiled. "We are a team," she said. "I will always look out for you, and you will always look out for me." They filled their pockets with the witch's treasure and left the gingerbread cottage behind.
Hansel and Gretel walked through the forest hand in hand. This time, Gretel marked the trees with little scratches so they would not get lost. Soon they saw their little house through the trees. They ran to the door, laughing. The world still had dark forests and tricky paths ahead. But together, they knew they could face anything.
