Kai loved the ocean more than anything. He loved the way the waves crashed and the sand tickled his toes. Today, Kai did not grab his surfboard. Today, he wanted to go on a nature walk!
Kai walked along the shore and up into the green, rolling hills. Wildflowers swayed in the warm breeze. Butterflies danced from petal to petal. "I wonder what I will find today!" said Kai.
Kai stopped under a tall, leafy tree. He heard a sound. Chirp, chirp, chirp! High up in the branches, a robin sat in a nest. The nest was round and cozy, made of twigs, grass, and soft mud.
"What a cool home!" said Kai. The robin had woven each twig together, one by one. The mud helped hold everything tight. Inside, three tiny blue eggs sat safe and warm. A nest is a home that keeps baby birds protected from wind and rain.
Kai kept walking. He crossed a sunny meadow buzzing with wildflowers. Then he saw something near a sandy dune — a hole in the ground! A fluffy brown rabbit popped its head out. "A burrow!" said Kai.
A burrow is a tunnel that rabbits dig underground. It is dark and snug inside. The rabbit uses its strong back legs to kick the dirt out. Down in the burrow, baby bunnies stay safe from foxes and storms. "Your home is underground!" Kai said with a grin.
Kai walked deeper into the hills. He heard a buzzing sound. Buzzzzz! Up in another tree, he spotted a big, golden beehive. Hundreds of bees flew in and out, busy as can be.
"That is one sticky home!" said Kai. Bees build their hives out of beeswax. The beeswax makes tiny rooms called cells. Bees store honey in some cells and keep their babies in others. A hive is a busy, sweet-smelling home that keeps the whole bee family together.
Kai hiked to the edge of the hills, where the trees grew thick and tall. There, he found a dark opening between some big rocks. It was a den! "I bet a bear lives here," Kai whispered. A den is a sheltered space where bears rest and stay warm all winter long.
Kai sat on a rock and thought about all the homes he had seen. Nests in trees. Burrows underground. Hives on branches. Dens in rocks. Every animal had a special place to feel safe and cozy. "But where is MY home?" Kai wondered.
Just then, a friendly seagull swooped down. "Squawk! Squawk!" it called. The seagull circled above Kai and flew toward the ocean. Kai laughed and followed. He ran down the hills, through the meadow, and back to the sandy shore.
Kai felt the warm sand under his feet and the salty breeze on his face. He smiled a big, wide smile. Birds weave nests. Rabbits dig burrows. Bees build hives. Bears find dens. And Kai? His home was right here — wherever he felt happy and loved. "Home," said Kai softly. And it was perfect.
