Ezra loved books more than anything in the whole wide world. He loved stories about dragons. He loved stories about stars. He loved stories about brave kids just like him.
Every day after lunch, Ezra liked to sit under the big, leafy tree outside his window. He would lean against its strong trunk and read. The shade felt cool, and the pages felt soft. It was his favorite place in the world.
But today, something was wrong. Ezra looked around his room. Toys were on the floor. Books were in piles. Crayons were under the bed. "Where is my favorite book?" Ezra said. He looked left. He looked right. He could not find it anywhere!
Ezra felt frustrated. His room was so messy that he could not see where anything belonged. "I want to read under my tree," he said softly. "But I cannot read if I cannot find my book." He took a deep breath. "I will clean up. One thing at a time."
First, Ezra picked up his toy cars. Red ones, blue ones, and a shiny green one. He put them in the big toy bin, one by one. Clink, clink, clink! "That was not so hard," Ezra said with a small smile. The floor looked a little better already.
Next, Ezra found his crayons under the bed. Red, yellow, orange, and purple—they had rolled everywhere! He gathered them up and put them back in their box. "There you go, crayons," he said. "You belong together." The room felt a little calmer now.
Then Ezra picked up his stuffed animals. A soft bear. A fuzzy rabbit. A tiny owl with button eyes. He set them on his bed in a neat row. "You look cozy up there," Ezra said. He stepped back and looked around. The room was getting brighter!
Now it was time for the books. Ezra stacked them one by one. Tall books on the left. Short books on the right. He liked the way they looked all lined up on the shelf. "Books are like friends," Ezra said. "They are best when you can find them."
And then—there it was! Under the very last pile, Ezra saw a bright red cover with gold stars on the front. "My favorite book!" he shouted. "I found you!" He hugged the book close to his chest. His heart felt warm and happy.
Ezra looked around his room one more time. The floor was clear. The toys were put away. The books were on the shelf, and the crayons were in their box. Everything had a place. "I did it," Ezra whispered. "I really did it." He felt so proud.
Ezra walked outside to his big, leafy tree. He sat down against the strong trunk. The shade was cool. The breeze was soft. He opened his bright red book with the gold stars and began to read. Every word felt like a gift.
Ezra smiled as he turned each page. His room was clean. His book was found. And his heart was full. Taking care of his space had made everything feel calm and bright. "Maybe," Ezra thought, "the best stories start when you take care of the little things."
