Ezra loved to read. Every day after school, he sat under his favorite tall oak tree with soft green leaves. He opened a book, and the words took him far, far away.
Ezra read about brave heroes and faraway lands. He read about helpers who saved the day. "I wish I could meet helpers like that," Ezra said with a smile.
But then—WHOOOOSH! A big gust of wind blew through the town. It shook the branches of the tall oak tree. It tugged at Ezra's book, and the pages ripped right out! They flew up, up, up into the sky like paper birds.
"Oh no! My book!" cried Ezra. Pages flew over rooftops. Pages flew past chimneys. Pages flew all over town! Ezra held the empty cover and began to run.
Ezra ran to the big red fire station. A friendly firefighter was holding some pages. "Are these yours?" she asked. "They landed right on our fire truck!" "Yes! Thank you!" said Ezra. "We are always here to help," said the friendly firefighter. "That is what firefighters do. We keep the town safe."
Ezra kept running. He ran all the way to the cozy school with the bright yellow door. A kind teacher stood outside, holding more pages. "I found these on the playground!" she said. "Thank you so much!" said Ezra. "Of course," said the kind teacher. "Teachers help children learn and grow every single day."
Ezra looked at the pages he had found so far. But some were still missing! He ran to the cheerful post office. A mail carrier was sorting letters inside. "Excuse me," said Ezra. "Did you see any pages fly by?" "I sure did!" said the mail carrier. "They landed in my mail bag!"
"I carry letters and packages to every house in town," said the mail carrier. "Rain or shine, I make sure people stay connected." "That is a really important job," said Ezra. The mail carrier smiled. "Every job in this town is important."
Ezra still needed a few more pages. He passed a crossing guard helping children cross the street safely. He passed a librarian putting books on a cart. Each one had found a page! "Here you go!" they each said with a wave.
At last, Ezra had every single page! He sat down under the tall oak tree with soft green leaves. He put each page back in order, one by one. The book was whole again.
Ezra opened his book and began to read again. But now the words felt different. The heroes in his stories were brave and kind. And so were the helpers in his town! Firefighters, teachers, mail carriers, crossing guards, and librarians—they all worked together every day.
"The best stories are not just in books," Ezra said softly. "They are all around me." And from that day on, every time Ezra saw a helper in his town, he smiled and said, "Thank you for making our community strong."
