Kai loved the ocean more than anything in the whole wide world. Every morning, he grabbed his surfboard and ran across the golden sand to meet the waves. The sun was bright. The water was blue. And Kai was ready to surf!
But this morning, something was very wrong. Kai paddled out on his surfboard and stopped. The ocean was completely still. There were no waves. There were no fish. There were no seagulls in the sky. Everything was quiet and empty. "Where did everything go?" Kai whispered.
Then Kai heard a tiny voice. "Down here!" it said. He looked down and saw a small, sparkly starfish clinging to his surfboard. "Hi! My name is Stella," she said with a grin. "I know why the beach is empty. All the nouns and verbs have disappeared!"
"Nouns and verbs?" asked Kai. "What are those?" Stella giggled. "Nouns are words that name things — like people, places, and animals! Without nouns, there are no things at all. That is why the beach is so empty. There are no waves, no shells, no fish — because the noun words are gone!"
"And verbs are action words," Stella went on. "Verbs make things move and go! Without verbs, nothing can splash or swim or fly. So even if we find the nouns, we need the verbs to make them come alive!" Kai's eyes grew big. "Then let's go find them!" he said.
Stella pointed to the shore. "Try saying a noun — a word that names a thing. Start with something you love!" Kai thought for a moment. Then he smiled and shouted, "Shell!" In a flash of sparkles, a beautiful golden shell appeared on the sand, glowing like a tiny treasure.
"It worked!" Kai cheered. "But it is just sitting there." Stella nodded. "That is because you need a verb — an action word! Tell the shell what to do!" Kai grinned and shouted, "Shine!" The shell began to glow and sparkle, sending beams of light across the beach.
Kai was so excited! He shouted more nouns. "Wave!" A big blue wave rose from the flat ocean. "Dolphin!" A shiny gray dolphin appeared in the water. "Seagull!" A white seagull popped into the sky. But they all just stood still like statues. "Now give them verbs!" said Stella.
Kai took a deep breath and shouted the verbs one by one. "Crash!" The wave crashed and tumbled onto the shore. "Leap!" The dolphin leaped high into the air with a joyful splash. "Soar!" The seagull soared across the bright blue sky. The beach was coming back to life!
Kai could not stop now! "Crab!" he shouted. A little red crab appeared. "Scuttle!" The crab scuttled sideways across the sand. "Palm tree!" A tall green palm tree grew up from the ground. "Sway!" Its big leaves swayed in the warm breeze. Nouns made the things. Verbs made them move!
The beach was buzzing with life again! Dolphins leaped. Waves crashed. Seagulls soared. Crabs scuttled. Kai looked at the biggest, most beautiful wave he had ever seen. "That one is mine," he said. He grabbed his surfboard and paddled out. "Surf!" he shouted — and he caught the biggest wave of all!
Kai rode the wave all the way to shore. He flopped onto the warm sand and laughed. "Thank you, Stella!" he said. "Now I know that nouns name people, places, and things. And verbs are action words that make them go!" Stella winked. "And you, Kai, are the noun who made it all happen. What is your verb?" Kai grinned. "Adventure!"
