Aisha loved two things more than anything in the world. She loved making up songs, and she loved big adventures. Today was going to be the best day ever. Her pirate friends had a treasure map, and they wanted her to come along!
"All aboard!" called the captain. Aisha climbed up onto the pirate ship. The ship had big patchwork sails made of red, yellow, and blue cloth. Treasure maps hung from the tall mast, flapping in the salty breeze. "Let's find some treasure!" Aisha sang out.
The pirate ship sailed across the sparkling turquoise waves. Aisha made up a little song as they sailed. "Over the waves, over the sea, treasure is waiting for you and me!" The captain laughed. The first mate clapped. The whole crew hummed along.
They landed on the first island. It was small and sandy, with one palm tree in the middle. Under the tree sat a glittering treasure chest! But it had a lock with numbers on it. Inside the chest, Aisha could see gold coins sorted into groups. "We have to count to open it," said the captain.
Aisha looked inside. She saw 2 groups of ten gold coins and 3 coins all by themselves. "I see 2 tens and 3 ones!" said Aisha. "2 tens is 20. Then add 3 ones. That makes 23!" She turned the lock to 23. Click! The chest popped open! "Hooray!" cheered the crew.
They sailed on to the next island. This island was a little bigger, with two palm trees and a funny-shaped rock. Another glittering treasure chest was tucked behind the rock. "More treasure!" said the first mate. "More counting!" said Aisha with a grin.
This chest had even more gold coins inside. Aisha counted carefully. She saw 4 groups of ten coins and 7 coins all by themselves. "4 tens is 40," she said slowly. "Plus 7 ones makes... 47!" She turned the lock to 47. Click! The chest opened wide. Gold coins glittered in the sun.
At last, they reached the biggest island of all. In the very center sat the biggest, most golden treasure chest they had ever seen. It was covered in sparkling jewels. "This is the big one!" whispered the captain. Everyone ran to look inside.
But something was wrong. The gold coins inside were all jumbled up! Tens and ones were mixed together in a big messy pile. The lock showed a blank space for a number. "Oh no!" cried the first mate. "How do we count this mess?" The captain scratched his head. No one knew what to do.
Aisha thought for a moment. Then she smiled. She began to sing! "First, find the tens, put them in a line. Count them by ten, and you'll do just fine! Then find the ones, put them in a row. Add them to the tens, and now you know!" The crew started sorting the coins as she sang.
Now the coins were in neat groups. Aisha counted them. "I see 6 tens! That's 60. And I see 5 ones. 60 plus 5 is... 65!" She turned the lock to 65. Click! The grand golden chest burst open, and golden light spilled out. "We did it!" Aisha cheered. "The song helped us see how tens and ones fit together!"
That night, under a sky full of stars, the whole crew danced on the deck of the pirate ship. Aisha sang her counting song one more time, and everyone joined in. "Tens and ones, ones and tens, count them up and count again!" They laughed and danced and sang until the moon was high. It was the best pirate adventure ever.
