Hana loved to dance. She danced in the morning. She danced at night. But her favorite place to dance was the kitchen! She would spin by the fridge and slide past the stove.
One Tuesday, Hana was dancing to her favorite song. Then something magical happened. The kitchen lights began to flicker. The floor began to glow. Rainbow colors swirled across the walls like paint splashing through the air!
The kitchen was not a kitchen anymore. It was a sparkling dance floor! Glowing sentences floated through the air like ribbons. And right in the middle of the room, Hana saw something she had never seen before — giant punctuation marks, alive and dancing!
A big, round Period stomped its feet — BOOM, BOOM, BOOM. "I am Period!" it said. "I end every sentence. When you see me, you know to stop." Period stomped once more. "Like this. Done. The end." Hana giggled. Period was very serious!
Then a curvy Comma slid across the floor — swooosh! "I am Comma!" it said with a smooth voice. "I help you pause in the middle of a sentence. I slow things down, just a little bit." Comma did a graceful slide to the left, then a graceful slide to the right.
Last came a bouncy Question Mark. It spun around and around — wheeee! "I am Question Mark!" it called out. "I go at the end of a question. Do you like to dance? See? That was a question!" Hana clapped her hands. "I do like to dance!" she said.
The three punctuation marks danced together, and Hana danced with them. They stomped. They slid. They spun. The sentences on the walls glowed bright and beautiful: "I like cats, dogs, and fish." "Do you want to play?" "The sun is out." Every sentence made perfect sense!
But then the music got very fast. The punctuation marks danced faster and faster! They bumped into each other. They tumbled and rolled. Period landed where Comma should be. Question Mark jumped to the wrong spot. Comma ended up at the end of a sentence! Everything got mixed up.
The sentences on the walls stopped making sense. One said: "I like cats. dogs. and fish," Another said: "The sun is out," And one said: "Do you want to play." "Oh no!" said Hana. "The sentences are all mixed up! The punctuation marks are in the wrong places!"
Hana had an idea. She would dance with each punctuation mark, one at a time, and help them find their right places! First, she stomped with Period. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM. "You go at the end!" she said. "The sun is out." Period stomped into place. The sentence glowed bright again!
Next, Hana slid with Comma. Swooosh! "You go in the middle, where we need a pause," she said. "I like cats, dogs, and fish." Comma slid into its spots. Then Hana spun with Question Mark. Wheee! "You go at the end of a question. Do you want to play?" Question Mark twirled into place. Every sentence made sense again!
The music slowed down. The rainbow lights twinkled softly. Period, Comma, and Question Mark took a bow. "Thank you, Hana!" they said. "You helped every sentence speak clearly!" Hana smiled and took a bow too. She still loved to dance in the kitchen. But now she knew — every sentence needs the right mark to say just what it means.
