Hana loved to dance. She danced in the kitchen. She danced in the yard. She danced everywhere she went! But today, something magical was about to happen.
Hana saw a glow coming from her fishbowl. She leaned in close. The water sparkled and swirled. Then — SPLASH! Hana dove right in. The water was warm and bright. She could breathe! She could swim! And best of all — she could dance underwater!
Five bright fish swam up to say hello. They were red and blue and gold. "Hi there!" said Hana. "Let me count you. One, two, three, four, five. Five fish!" The fish wiggled their fins and swam in a happy circle around her.
Then two of the fish darted behind a big pink coral. "Oh!" said Hana. "Two fish swam away." She counted the fish that were left. "One, two, three. Five take away two is three!" Hana twirled through the water and laughed. Taking away was fun!
Hana swam deeper. She found six shiny bubbles floating in a row. They wobbled and glowed like tiny moons. "Six bubbles!" she said. Then — POP, POP, POP, POP! Four bubbles popped! "Six take away four is… two!" Two bubbles were left, and they floated up, up, up.
Next, Hana saw four sea stars resting on a rock. They were orange and bumpy. "One, two, three, four," she counted. One sea star slid off the rock and crawled away slowly. "Four take away one is three!" said Hana. She waved goodbye to the little sea star.
Hana danced through the water like a ballerina. She kicked and she spun. Every time something swam away or popped or crawled off, she counted what was left. "Taking away is like a game!" she said. "I just count what stays."
Then Hana heard a tiny sound. It was a small blue fish, hiding behind some sea grass. The little fish looked sad. "What is wrong?" asked Hana softly. "I had seven friends," said the little fish. "But some of them swam away. Now I do not know how many are left."
"I can help!" said Hana. "How many friends swam away?" The little fish thought hard. "Three friends swam away," it said. Hana held up her fingers. She put up seven. Then she put down three. "One, two, three, four. You have four friends left!"
"Four friends!" said the little fish. Its eyes got big and bright. "But where are they?" Hana looked around. She spotted four little fish hiding behind the big pink coral. "There they are!" she called. The four friends zoomed out and swam around the little blue fish in a joyful circle.
"Thank you, Hana!" said the little blue fish. "You used subtraction to find my friends!" Hana smiled a great big smile. "Seven take away three is four," she said proudly. "Taking away helped me solve the problem!" All the fish danced with Hana through the sparkling water.
Hana swam back up through the warm, glowing water. She was home again, standing in her kitchen. But she was still dancing! "Taking away is just as fun as adding up," she said with a grin. And from inside her fishbowl, a tiny blue fish gave her a wink.
