Mei loved to draw. She drew cats and clouds and castles. She drew rainbows and rockets and roses. Her sketchbook was her favorite thing in the whole wide world.
Every morning, Mei would sit at the wooden kitchen table and open her sketchbook. She would draw and draw and draw. The world outside was sunny and bright, but Mei did not look up.
"I will draw one more picture," said Mei. "Just one more!" But one more turned into two more. And two more turned into three. Mei forgot to eat her breakfast. The bowl of fresh fruit sat on the table, waiting.
Mei drew all through lunch. She drew all through the afternoon. Her hands got sticky with color. Her fingers got smudgy with pencil marks. But Mei did not stop to wash up.
When the stars peeked in through her window, Mei was still drawing. "Just one more star," she whispered. "Just one more moon." She did not climb into her soft bed. She did not close her eyes.
The next morning, something felt different. Mei picked up her pencil, but her hand was shaky. She tried to draw a cat, but it looked wobbly. She tried to draw a rainbow, but the colors felt dull. "What is wrong?" said Mei. "Why can't I draw?"
Mei's tummy rumbled loud like a drum. Her eyes felt heavy like stones. Her sticky hands made the paper smudge. "Oh," said Mei softly. "I think my body is trying to tell me something."
Mei closed her sketchbook. She walked to the kitchen table and picked up a bright red apple from the bowl of fresh fruit. She took a big bite. It was sweet and crunchy! She ate a banana too. "Yum!" said Mei. "Good food gives my body energy — like fuel for a rocket!"
Then Mei went to the warm bathroom. She turned on the bubbly sink and scrubbed her hands with soap. She rubbed and rubbed until all the smudges washed away. Her hands felt fresh and clean! "Clean hands help keep germs away," said Mei. "And now I can hold my pencil better too!"
That night, Mei did not draw under the stars. She climbed into her soft bed and pulled the blanket up to her chin. The stars peeked in through the window, and Mei peeked back. "Good night, stars," she whispered. "My body needs rest so I can grow strong and healthy." And Mei closed her eyes and fell fast asleep.
The next morning, Mei woke up and stretched her arms wide. She felt wonderful! She ate a good breakfast. She washed her face and hands. Then she sat down and opened her sketchbook. Her hand was steady. Her lines were smooth. Her colors were bright and bold!
Mei drew the best cat she had ever drawn. She drew the brightest rainbow she had ever seen. "I get it now!" said Mei. "When I take care of my body — eating well, washing up, and getting cozy sleep — I feel strong and healthy and ready to create my best art yet!" And from that day on, Mei always remembered: taking care of yourself is the most important thing you can do.
