Aisha loved two things more than anything in the world. She loved making up songs, and she loved counting things. One sunny morning, she found a glittery map tucked inside a bottle on the beach. "A treasure island!" Aisha sang out. "I will find every treasure there is to find!"
Aisha followed the map down a winding path. The path was lined with glittering gems and golden coins half-buried in the warm sand. She skipped along and sang a little song. "One step, two steps, here I go! What treasures will I find? I don't know!"
Aisha spotted something shiny by a big rock. It was a gold coin! She picked it up and put it in her treasure bag. Then she saw one more gold coin in the sand. She picked that one up too. "One coin plus one more coin makes two!" Aisha sang. "1 + 1 = 2!"
She kept walking and found a tide pool full of pretty seashells. Two seashells glowed pink in the water. Then she found one more glowing seashell tucked under a leaf. "Two seashells plus one more seashell makes three!" she sang. "2 + 1 = 3!"
The path led Aisha to a field of tall, swaying grass. She looked down and saw three red gems sparkling in the sunlight. A few steps ahead, she found two more red gems hiding in the grass. "Three gems plus two more gems makes five!" Aisha sang loudly. "3 + 2 = 5!"
Aisha came to a wooden bridge over a babbling brook. On the bridge, she found four blue gems sitting in a row. On the other side, she found one more blue gem on a mossy stone. "Four gems plus one more gem makes five!" she sang. "4 + 1 = 5! Now I have five blue gems and five red gems!"
At last, Aisha reached the final cave. It was big and dark, but tiny crystals on the walls made it sparkle like stars. In the middle of the cave sat a golden treasure chest. "Oh wow!" Aisha whispered. "That must be the biggest treasure of all!"
Aisha ran toward the chest, but she tripped on a bumpy rock! Her treasure bag flew open, and all her treasures tumbled out. Gold coins, red gems, blue gems, and glowing seashells rolled everywhere across the cave floor. "Oh no!" Aisha cried. "They are all mixed up!"
Aisha looked at the golden treasure chest. It had a riddle carved into the front: "Count each treasure, one by one. Add them up when you are done." Aisha took a deep breath. "I can do this," she said. "I will use my addition songs!"
Aisha sorted her treasures into groups. She put the gold coins together. "One plus one is two. I have 2 coins!" She put the seashells together. "Two plus one is three. I have 3 seashells!" She put the red gems together. "Three plus two is five. I have 5 red gems!" She put the blue gems together. "Four plus one is five. I have 5 blue gems!"
Now Aisha added them all up. "2 coins plus 3 seashells is 5. Then 5 plus 5 red gems is 10. Then 10 plus 5 blue gems is 15. I have 15 treasures!" she sang as loud as she could. Her voice echoed through the cave, and the golden treasure chest popped open with a bright flash of light!
Inside the golden chest was the most beautiful crown Aisha had ever seen. It had spots for every treasure she had found—two coins, three seashells, five red gems, and five blue gems. She placed each one in its spot and put the crown on her head. "When you count and when you sing, you can do most anything!" Aisha sang, and she danced all the way home.
