Mei loved to draw. She drew cats and stars and trees. She drew big things and small things. Her sketchbook went with her everywhere — even to school.
On Monday morning, Mei's teacher stood by the sunny windowsill. Little clay pots sat in a row. Each pot was painted bright colors by the students. Inside each pot, a small green plant stretched toward the light.
"Mei, I have a big job for you," said her teacher. "You will be our Garden Helper this week! You will water the plants every morning and make sure they get enough sun." Mei's eyes grew wide. A big job — just for her!
"I will do a great job!" said Mei. She picked up the small green watering can and gave each plant a drink. Drip, drip, drip. The water soaked into the soft brown soil. The plants seemed to stand up a little taller.
Then Mei had an idea. She opened her sketchbook and drew each plant. She gave them silly names. "You are Sunny," she said to the tall one. "And you are Sprout!" She drew Sunny with a big grin. She drew Sprout with tiny glasses. Mei laughed and laughed.
On Tuesday, Mei watered the plants again. Drip, drip, drip. She turned the pots so each plant could feel the warm sun. "There you go, Sunny!" she said. "Drink up, Sprout!" Being the Garden Helper felt wonderful.
But on Wednesday, Mei started drawing a big, big picture. It was a castle with dragons and a rainbow that went all the way across the page. She drew and drew and drew. She was so busy that she forgot all about the plants.
On Thursday morning, Mei looked at the windowsill. Oh no! The plants were drooping. Their leaves hung down like sad little arms. Sunny did not look sunny at all. Sprout looked very small. "I forgot to water you!" Mei whispered. Her heart sank.
"I let my class down," Mei said softly. Her teacher came over and put a hand on Mei's shoulder. "Everyone makes mistakes," her teacher said kindly. "What matters is what you do next. Can you think of a way to remember?"
Mei thought and thought. Then she smiled. She opened her sketchbook and drew a bright, colorful watering schedule. She drew a sun for Monday, a rain cloud for Tuesday, a flower for each day. "I will check this every morning!" said Mei. "I will not forget again." She used her imagination to solve the problem!
Mei watered the plants right away. Drip, drip, drip. She gave them extra care. She turned each pot to face the sun. She checked the soil with her finger. "Hang in there, Sunny," she said gently. "You can do it, Sprout." And by Friday — the little garden was greener and healthier than ever!
Mei held up her sketchbook for the whole class to see. She showed them her drawings of Sunny and Sprout. She showed them her colorful watering schedule. "Being responsible means showing up, even when it is hard," said Mei. The class clapped and cheered. "Hooray for our Garden Helper!" Mei grinned. It was the best job she ever had.
