Priya loved puzzles more than anything. She loved puzzles with shapes. She loved puzzles with numbers. She loved puzzles with colors and stars and swirls. Every morning, she walked into her bright, colorful classroom and smiled a big smile.
The classroom had tables full of puzzles. It had bins of crayons in every color. And it had a big window that looked out onto fluffy white clouds drifting slowly across a wide blue sky. Priya thought it was the best room in the whole school.
Every day, Priya picked a new puzzle to solve. She put together a puzzle with a big red boat. Easy! She put together a puzzle with a happy green frog. Easy! "I am good at puzzles!" said Priya, and she clapped her hands.
One morning, her teacher set a new puzzle on the table. It had many, many pieces. The pieces were small, and the colors looked all the same. "This one is a challenge," said her teacher with a warm smile. "Give it a try!"
Priya opened the box. She tried one piece. It did not fit. She tried another piece. It did not fit either. She turned the pieces this way and that way, but nothing worked. The puzzle was really, really hard.
Priya's face got hot. Her hands felt tight. "I can't do it!" she said. Her voice was wobbly. She wanted to push all the pieces away. She felt upset and frustrated, and her eyes began to sting with tears.
Her teacher came and sat down beside her. "Priya, I know a special trick," she said softly. "When you feel upset, take a deep breath in. Then breathe out slowly. And while you breathe, imagine a calm, floating cloud drifting across the sky."
Priya looked out the big window. She saw the fluffy white clouds drifting slowly across the wide blue sky. She took a deep breath in. Then she let it out, long and slow. She imagined one soft cloud floating up, up, up — carrying her worries far away.
She took another breath. In and out. She imagined another cloud floating by, soft and light. Each breath made Priya feel a little lighter. Each breath made Priya feel a little more peaceful. The tight feeling in her hands went away.
Priya opened her eyes. Her mind felt clear, like the wide blue sky. She looked down at the puzzle pieces again. This time, she did not feel upset. She picked up one piece and turned it slowly. "I think this one goes here," she whispered. Click! It fit!
Piece by piece, Priya solved the tricky puzzle all on her own. Click, click, click! When she put in the very last piece, she jumped up from her chair. "I did it!" she cheered. Her teacher clapped and said, "You did it, Priya! You stayed calm and found a way."
Now, whenever something feels too hard, Priya knows just what to do. She takes a deep breath in and lets it out slowly. She imagines a calm, floating cloud carrying her worries away. And with a clear mind and a brave heart, Priya knows she can try again.
