Liam loved to run fast. He loved to jump high. He loved to laugh so loud that the birds flew out of the trees. But there was one thing Liam did NOT love. Math. "Math is no fun," said Liam. "I would rather run!"
One sunny morning, Liam splashed into the swamp classroom. Lily pads floated on the warm water. A big green chalkboard sat propped against a mossy log. "Today we will compare numbers," said a voice. Liam groaned. "Not numbers!"
SPLASH! Up from the water popped a friendly alligator with a wide, toothy smile. "Hi there! My name is Chomp," he said. "I LOVE numbers. And I love to eat!" Liam laughed. "You are one goofy alligator!" "Not as goofy as you," said Chomp with a wink.
Chomp waddled over to the big green chalkboard. He wrote two numbers with his claw: 7 and 5. "Watch this!" said Chomp. He opened his big mouth wide and pointed it right at the 7. "My mouth always opens toward the GREATER number. The number that is bigger!" he said.
"See?" said Chomp. "7 is greater than 5. We write it like this: 7 > 5. The open side of the sign faces the greater number. The pointy side faces the smaller number." Liam looked at Chomp's big open mouth. It DID look like the sign! "Your mouth is a greater-than sign!" Liam said.
"Let's try one!" said Chomp. He wrote 3 and 8 on the chalkboard. "Which number is greater?" Liam hopped from one number stepping stone to another. "Three... four... five... six... seven... eight! Eight is greater than three!" "Yes!" cheered Chomp. "So we write 3 < 8. The pointy side points at the smaller number."
"That means 3 is LESS THAN 8," said Chomp. He turned his mouth toward the 8. His jaws opened wide. "My mouth chomps toward the greater number every time!" Liam giggled. "You always eat the bigger number! That is so silly!" "Silly, but it works!" said Chomp.
They tried more and more. Chomp wrote 9 and 2 on the chalkboard. "9 is greater than 2!" shouted Liam. "9 > 2!" Then Chomp wrote 4 and 10. "4 is less than 10!" said Liam. "4 < 10! The pointy side points at the smaller number!" "You are getting good at this!" said Chomp.
Then Chomp wrote two new numbers: 6 and 6. Liam stared at the chalkboard. He scratched his head. "Wait," said Liam. "Six and six are the SAME. Your mouth can't chomp either one! What do we do now?" Liam plopped down on a lily pad. "I'm stuck!"
Chomp smiled. He closed his mouth tight. His lips made a flat, straight line. "When two numbers are the same, they are EQUAL," said Chomp. "We use this sign: =. It has two straight lines, just like my closed mouth! So we write 6 = 6." "Equal to!" said Liam. "6 is equal to 6!"
Liam laughed his loudest laugh yet. It was so loud that the fireflies blinked and the cattails shook! "Greater than, less than, and equal to!" Liam shouted. "Chomp, you made math FUN!" "You did the hard work," said Chomp. "I just opened my mouth!"
From that day on, Liam still loved to run fast. He still loved to jump high. He still loved to laugh loud. But now, Liam loved math too. "Comparing numbers is just as fun as running!" said Liam. And Chomp opened his big mouth wide and smiled.
