Liam is running with his arms out wide and a big goofy grin on his face, his hair bouncing, mid-stride across stepping stones shaped like numbers in shallow swamp water. In the background, a bright colorful swamp with tall green cattails, lily pads floating on sparkling water, and friendly fireflies buzzing in the warm sunshine.

Liam loved to run fast. He loved to jump high. He loved to laugh so loud that the birds flew out of the trees. But there was one thing Liam did NOT love. Math. "Math is no fun," said Liam. "I would rather run!"

Liam is standing ankle-deep in the shallow swamp water near the big green chalkboard propped against the mossy log, his hands on his cheeks and his mouth open in a dramatic groan. In the background, lily pads dot the sparkling water, tall cattails sway gently, and friendly fireflies float in the air.

One sunny morning, Liam splashed into the swamp classroom. Lily pads floated on the warm water. A big green chalkboard sat propped against a mossy log. "Today we will compare numbers," said a voice. Liam groaned. "Not numbers!"

Chomp is bursting up out of the shallow swamp water with a big friendly toothy grin, water splashing around him, while Liam stands nearby laughing with his hands on his belly. In the background, the bright swamp classroom with the big green chalkboard on the mossy log and tall cattails rising up.

SPLASH! Up from the water popped a friendly alligator with a wide, toothy smile. "Hi there! My name is Chomp," he said. "I LOVE numbers. And I love to eat!" Liam laughed. "You are one goofy alligator!" "Not as goofy as you," said Chomp with a wink.

Chomp is standing next to the big green chalkboard propped against the mossy log, which shows the numbers 7 and 5 written in white chalk, with his jaws open wide pointing toward the 7. In the background, stepping stones shaped like numbers dot the shallow sparkling swamp water, with fireflies buzzing around.

Chomp waddled over to the big green chalkboard. He wrote two numbers with his claw: 7 and 5. "Watch this!" said Chomp. He opened his big mouth wide and pointed it right at the 7. "My mouth always opens toward the GREATER number. The number that is bigger!" he said.

Chomp is pointing with his claw at the big green chalkboard, which now shows '7 > 5' written in white chalk, while Liam stands beside him looking up at the board with wide eyes and a surprised smile. In the background, lily pads and cattails frame the bright, sunny swamp classroom.

"See?" said Chomp. "7 is greater than 5. We write it like this: 7 > 5. The open side of the sign faces the greater number. The pointy side faces the smaller number." Liam looked at Chomp's big open mouth. It DID look like the sign! "Your mouth is a greater-than sign!" Liam said.

Liam is hopping across the number-shaped stepping stones in the shallow water, arms out for balance, counting excitedly, while Chomp watches him from beside the big green chalkboard that shows '3 < 8' in white chalk. In the background, the warm sunny swamp with sparkling water, fireflies, and cattails all around.

"Let's try one!" said Chomp. He wrote 3 and 8 on the chalkboard. "Which number is greater?" Liam hopped from one number stepping stone to another. "Three... four... five... six... seven... eight! Eight is greater than three!" "Yes!" cheered Chomp. "So we write 3 < 8. The pointy side points at the smaller number."

Chomp is turning his head with jaws wide open toward the number 8 on the big green chalkboard, looking playful and silly, while Liam is giggling beside him with his hands over his mouth. In the background, the mossy log, lily pads, and tall cattails in the bright swamp classroom.

"That means 3 is LESS THAN 8," said Chomp. He turned his mouth toward the 8. His jaws opened wide. "My mouth chomps toward the greater number every time!" Liam giggled. "You always eat the bigger number! That is so silly!" "Silly, but it works!" said Chomp.

Liam is jumping up with one fist in the air in celebration, splashing swamp water, while Chomp claps his small front claws together happily beside the big green chalkboard showing '4 < 10' in white chalk. In the background, fireflies swirl around the bright, sunny swamp with stepping stones and cattails.

They tried more and more. Chomp wrote 9 and 2 on the chalkboard. "9 is greater than 2!" shouted Liam. "9 > 2!" Then Chomp wrote 4 and 10. "4 is less than 10!" said Liam. "4 < 10! The pointy side points at the smaller number!" "You are getting good at this!" said Chomp.

Liam is sitting on a large lily pad in the shallow water with a puzzled look on his face, scratching his head, while Chomp stands beside the big green chalkboard showing '6 and 6' in white chalk. In the background, the swamp classroom with the mossy log, tall cattails, and warm sparkling water.

Then Chomp wrote two new numbers: 6 and 6. Liam stared at the chalkboard. He scratched his head. "Wait," said Liam. "Six and six are the SAME. Your mouth can't chomp either one! What do we do now?" Liam plopped down on a lily pad. "I'm stuck!"

Chomp is pressing his jaws tightly closed so his mouth forms a flat straight line, standing right next to the big green chalkboard which now shows '6 = 6' in white chalk, while Liam is leaping to his feet off the lily pad with an excited face. In the background, the bright swamp with fireflies glowing, cattails, and sunlight sparkling on the water.

Chomp smiled. He closed his mouth tight. His lips made a flat, straight line. "When two numbers are the same, they are EQUAL," said Chomp. "We use this sign: =. It has two straight lines, just like my closed mouth! So we write 6 = 6." "Equal to!" said Liam. "6 is equal to 6!"

Liam is throwing his head back laughing with his mouth wide open, arms spread out, while Chomp grins his big toothy smile beside him, as fireflies swirl and blink all around them both in the swamp. In the background, cattails shaking, lily pads rippling, and golden sunshine streaming across the colorful swamp classroom.

Liam laughed his loudest laugh yet. It was so loud that the fireflies blinked and the cattails shook! "Greater than, less than, and equal to!" Liam shouted. "Chomp, you made math FUN!" "You did the hard work," said Chomp. "I just opened my mouth!"

Liam is running joyfully across the number-shaped stepping stones in the swamp, splashing water, while Chomp waddles alongside him in the shallow water with his mouth open in a wide, happy grin. In the background, the bright, colorful swamp classroom with the big green chalkboard on the mossy log, tall cattails, lily pads, fireflies, and warm golden sunshine.

From that day on, Liam still loved to run fast. He still loved to jump high. He still loved to laugh loud. But now, Liam loved math too. "Comparing numbers is just as fun as running!" said Liam. And Chomp opened his big mouth wide and smiled.
