Mei sits at her little wooden desk, happily drawing in her sketchbook with a yellow crayon in hand. Scattered crayons and open sketchbooks cover the desk. Cheerful drawings are taped to the wall behind her. In the background, bright windows let golden sunlight pour into the cozy room, with green potted plants lining the windowsills.

Mei loved to draw. She drew cats. She drew trees. She drew big, bright suns with happy faces. Her sketchbook was her favorite thing in the whole world.

Mei leans over her sketchbook at the little wooden desk, concentrating as she draws a picture of a smiling sun with orange and yellow crayons. Whiskers the cat is curled up on the soft rug nearby. In the background, the sun-filled room glows warmly with cheerful drawings taped to the walls.

Every morning, Mei sat at her little wooden desk. She picked up her crayons and started to draw. She could draw all day long and never get bored.

Mei looks up from her sketchbook at her little wooden desk, turning toward her mom who stands in the doorway with a warm smile. Whiskers the cat sits on the soft rug, looking up too. In the background, the bright, cozy room with green potted plants on the windowsill and cheerful drawings on the walls.

But today, Mei's mom came to the door. "Mei, I need your help today," she said. "The cat needs food. The plants need water. And your room needs to be tidied up." Mei looked at her sketchbook. She wanted to keep drawing.

Mei stands next to her little wooden desk, looking uncertain with her hands clasped together, while her mom kneels down beside her and places a gentle hand on her shoulder. Whiskers the cat rubs against Mei's leg. In the background, sunlight streams through the bright windows of the cozy room.

"But those jobs are so big!" said Mei. "What if I can't do them all?" Her mom smiled. "Try one at a time," she said. "You might be surprised." Mei took a deep breath. She could try.

Mei kneels on the floor, placing the cat food bowl down, while Whiskers the cat eagerly approaches the bowl with perked-up ears and a swishing tail. Mei is smiling at the happy cat. In the background, the cozy kitchen area with bright windows and green potted plants on the windowsill.

First, Mei fed the cat. She scooped food into a little bowl. The cat ran over and began to eat. "You were so hungry!" said Mei. The cat purred and purred. Mei felt a warm feeling inside.

Mei sits at her little wooden desk, drawing a big yellow smiley face in her sketchbook with a yellow crayon. She is grinning proudly. The sketchbook shows one bright smiley face on the page. In the background, the cheerful drawings taped to the wall and the sun-filled windows.

Mei ran to her sketchbook. She picked up a yellow crayon and drew a big smiley face. "One job done!" she said. The smiley face looked proud, just like Mei felt inside.

Mei stands by the windowsill, carefully pouring water from the small green watering can onto the green potted plants. She leans in close to one plant, smiling as water trickles into the soil. In the background, bright sunlight glows through the windows, and Whiskers the cat watches from the soft rug.

Next, Mei watered the plants. She carried a small green watering can to each pot on the windowsill. She pretended she was giving the plants a drink of rain. "Here you go, little plants!" she said.

Mei sits at her little wooden desk, drawing a second smiley face in green crayon in her sketchbook. The page now shows two smiley faces — one yellow and one green. Mei looks excited and proud. In the background, the freshly watered green potted plants on the windowsill glisten in the sunlight.

The leaves looked greener. The soil looked dark and happy. Mei smiled. She ran back to her sketchbook and drew another smiley face — this time with a green crayon. "Two jobs done!" she cheered.

Mei bends down to pick up crayons from the floor, placing them into a crayon box on her little wooden desk. Sketchbooks are neatly stacked beside the box. Whiskers the cat watches from the soft rug. In the background, the cozy room looks partly tidied, with cheerful drawings still taped to the walls and bright windows letting in light.

Last, Mei tidied up her room. She put the crayons back in their box. She stacked her sketchbooks in a neat pile. She picked up her toys and put them on the shelf. It was a lot of work!

Mei stands in the middle of her clean, tidy room, arms spread wide with a huge smile on her face. Her little wooden desk is neat, with the sketchbook open showing three smiley faces — yellow, green, and orange. Whiskers the cat stretches happily on the soft rug. In the background, the bright, organized room glows with sunlight through the windows, green potted plants on the sills, and cheerful drawings on the walls.

Mei looked around. Her room was clean and bright. Everything was in its place. She took a deep breath and felt something wonderful — she felt proud. She drew one more smiley face, this time in orange. "Three jobs done!" she said with a big grin.

Mei holds up her open sketchbook to show her mom the three smiley faces — yellow, green, and orange. Her mom leans down and wraps her in a big hug. Both are beaming with joy. Whiskers the cat sits at their feet, looking up. In the background, the clean, sun-filled room with green potted plants on the windowsill and cheerful drawings taped to the walls.

Mei's mom came back and looked around. "Mei, you did it all!" she said. "I am so proud of you." Mei held up her sketchbook. "Look! I drew a smiley face for every job. Three smiles for three jobs!" Her mom gave her a big hug.

Mei sits at her little wooden desk in the warm evening light, drawing a very large, colorful smiley face in her sketchbook. Whiskers the cat is curled up asleep on the soft rug beside the desk. Mei has a peaceful, content smile on her face. In the background, the cozy room is bathed in soft golden evening light from the windows, with green potted plants on the sills and cheerful drawings on the walls.

That night, Mei sat at her desk one more time. She drew one last picture — the biggest smiley face yet. Under it she wrote: "Being responsible makes me smile." And it really, truly did.
