Aisha loved making up songs. She sang in the morning. She sang at lunch. She even hummed little tunes while she walked to school. Today, Aisha sat on the rainbow reading rug in her bright, cozy classroom. Her teacher held up a big book with a shiny cover.
"Today we will read a story," said her teacher. "But I need you to find the meaning hidden inside it. Can you figure out what the story is really about?" Aisha looked around. The other kids nodded. But Aisha did not know where to start. How do you find meaning inside a story?
Then Aisha saw something on her teacher's desk — a sparkly detective hat and a big magnifying glass! "You can be a story detective," said her teacher with a smile. "Detectives look for clues. And every good story is full of them." Aisha jumped up and put on the sparkly detective hat. She picked up the magnifying glass.
"First, look for WHO is in the story," said her teacher. Aisha held up the magnifying glass and looked at the first page. She saw a little fox with a red scarf. "I found a clue!" said Aisha. "The story is about a little fox!" A song popped into her head right away.
Aisha sang, "Who is in the story? Let me see! A little fox, as brave as can be!" The class clapped along. Finding clues was fun! "Great work, detective!" said her teacher. "Now look for WHAT happens in the story."
Aisha turned the pages slowly. She used her magnifying glass to study each picture. The little fox tried to cross a wide, rushing river. But the water was too fast! "I found another clue!" said Aisha. "The fox tries to cross a big river, but it is too hard!"
Aisha made up a new song. "What happens next? Oh, what could it be? The fox wants to cross, but the river runs free!" Her classmates swayed to the beat. "Now find WHEN and WHERE," said her teacher. Aisha looked at the pictures again with her magnifying glass.
She saw golden leaves falling from the trees. She saw a forest with tall, tall oaks. "The story happens in the fall, in a big forest!" said Aisha. She sang, "When is it? Fall! Where is it? The woods! The fox is looking for a way through the woods!" Three clues down. One big one to go.
"Now find the biggest clue of all," said her teacher. "Find WHY. Why does the story matter?" Aisha looked at the book. She looked and looked. But she could not find the answer. "I don't see it," Aisha whispered. She felt stuck. She wanted to take off the sparkly detective hat and sit back down.
Then Aisha had an idea. She hummed her first song. Then her second. Then her third. "Wait!" she said. "The fox is brave. The river is hard. The forest is big. But the fox keeps trying!" Aisha's eyes grew wide. "The story is about never giving up, even when things are hard! THAT is why it matters!"
Aisha stood in front of the class. She put all her little songs together into one big song. She sang, "WHO is brave? The fox! WHAT does he do? He tries and tries! WHEN? In the fall! WHERE? In the woods! And WHY does it matter? Because you should never give up!" The whole class cheered and clapped and stomped their feet.
"You did it, detective!" said her teacher. "You found all the clues and solved the mystery of meaning!" Aisha smiled the biggest smile. She learned that every story has clues hiding inside it — who, what, when, where, and why. And if you ever get stuck, just like Aisha, try putting the pieces together in your own special way. You might even make a song!
