Priya loved puzzles more than anything in the whole wide world. She loved jigsaw puzzles, number puzzles, and riddles that made her brain tingle. But her favorite place to think was the school playground, where bright, oversized shapes hung from monkey bars, stretched across seesaws, and balanced on wobbly platforms. Every recess, the playground was alive with spinning circles, sliding rectangles, and teetering triangles.
But on this Tuesday morning, something was very, very wrong. Priya ran outside for recess and stopped in her tracks. The merry-go-round wasn't spinning. The swings hung perfectly still, like frozen icicles. The slide sat silent and stuck. Not a single shape on the playground was moving. "What happened?" Priya whispered, her eyes growing wide.
Priya walked slowly toward the merry-go-round and gave it a push. Nothing. Not even a wobble. Then she noticed something strange—a glowing puzzle piece was tucked under the platform, shaped like a perfect circle. It shimmered in the sunlight like a golden coin. A tiny message was etched into its surface: "I have no corners and no sides that are flat. I roll and spin wherever I'm at. Where do I belong?"
Priya turned the glowing circle over in her hands and thought hard. "No corners and no flat sides," she said out loud, tapping her chin. "A circle is round all the way around—that's why it rolls! Wheels are circles, and wheels make things spin!" She looked at the merry-go-round and spotted an empty, circle-shaped slot right in the center. With a deep breath, she pressed the golden circle into place.
WHOOOOSH! The merry-go-round burst to life, spinning round and round in a blur of color! The oversized circles hanging from the monkey bars started twirling too, like cheerful pinwheels. "Circles roll and spin because they're round!" Priya cheered, clapping her hands together. "They have no corners to stop them!" Kids nearby gasped and ran closer to watch.
"But the swings and slides are still stuck," said a boy with a worried frown. Priya nodded. "There must be more puzzles to find!" She dashed toward the seesaws, where long, oversized rectangles stretched across each one like colorful bridges. Tucked between two seesaws, she found another glowing puzzle piece—this time shaped like a rectangle. Its message read: "I have four sides and four square corners. Two sides are long and two sides are short. Where do I connect?"
"Four sides, four square corners," Priya repeated, squinting at the rectangle. "Rectangles are great for building because their flat sides connect to other shapes, like bricks in a wall or planks in a bridge!" She looked at the swings and spotted two empty rectangle-shaped slots on the tall swing frame, right where the crossbar connected the two sides. "Rectangles hold things together!" she said, snapping the glowing piece into the first slot.
CLANK! CREAK! SWOOOOSH! The swings jolted to life, swaying back and forth like happy dancers! The rectangles on the seesaws began tilting up and down with a satisfying clunk-clunk-clunk. "She did it again!" cheered a girl, pumping her fist in the air. Priya grinned from ear to ear. "Rectangles stretch and connect," she explained. "Their flat sides and square corners make them perfect for building strong structures, like doors, windows, and even this swing frame!"
"One more to go!" Priya called out, racing toward the wobbly platforms where oversized triangles balanced in colorful rows. The slide was still frozen solid. Near its base, half-buried in the wood chips, she found the last glowing puzzle piece—a bright triangle. Its message said: "I have three sides and three pointed corners. I am the strongest shape of all. Where do I balance?"
"The strongest shape?" Priya murmured, studying the triangle carefully. "Three sides push against each other, so a triangle doesn't bend or squish—that's what makes it so strong! That's why bridges and rooftops are built with triangles!" She looked up at the very top of the slide and saw a triangle-shaped slot at the peak. She climbed the ladder, her heart thumping, and pressed the glowing triangle into place.
ZING! ZOOM! WHEEE! The slide hummed and gleamed, and the triangles on the wobbly platforms began rocking and balancing beautifully. The entire playground was alive again! Every shape was moving—circles spinning, rectangles connecting, and triangles balancing. Kids poured onto the equipment, laughing and shouting. "You saved the playground, Priya!" they called. Priya slid down the slide with her arms in the air, laughing all the way to the bottom.
That afternoon, Priya sat on a bench and looked around with brand-new eyes. She saw circles in the bike wheels rolling by, rectangles in the windows of the school building, and triangles in the peaked rooftop above. "Shapes aren't just on the playground," she said softly, smiling to herself. "They're everywhere—rolling, connecting, and balancing to make the whole world work." And from that day on, Priya never looked at the world the same way again.
