Liam was the fastest kid in Room 12. He ran fast to breakfast. He ran fast to recess. He even ran fast to the pencil sharpener, which was only three steps away. "ZOOM!" he yelled, sliding across the shiny classroom floor in his sneakers. His teacher shook her head, but she couldn't help smiling. Liam did everything at top speed — except math. Math made him want to run the other way.
One Monday morning, something very strange happened. Liam plopped into his seat and opened his math workbook. But the pages looked wrong. Really wrong. The problems said things like: 9 - __ = 4 and 7 - __ = 2. "Hey!" Liam shouted, flipping through the pages. "Where did all the numbers go?" He looked around. Every kid in the room was staring at their workbooks with wide, confused eyes.
Then the classroom lights flickered. The chalkboard at the front of the room began to glow a brilliant, shimmery green. The numbers written on it — the ones from their morning warm-up — started to wiggle. They jiggled. They shook. And then, one by one, they peeled right off the board and floated into the air like glowing fireflies! A squeaky little voice giggled from somewhere behind the chalkboard. "You'll never find them! They're MINE now!"
The floor rippled like water, and suddenly the whole classroom melted away. Liam gasped. He was standing on a giant golden number line that stretched across a shimmering purple sky! Colorful digits — reds, blues, greens, and yellows — danced through the air all around him. And there, sitting on top of the number 10, was a tiny creature no bigger than a lunchbox. It had pointy ears, a long curly tail, and a giant burlap sack stuffed with glowing numbers. "I'm the Number Thief!" the creature squeaked proudly. "And I LOVE stealing digits!"
"Give them back!" Liam shouted, and he did what he always did — he ran. He sprinted down the golden number line as fast as his legs could carry him. But every time he got close, the Number Thief just hopped to another number and giggled. "You can't CATCH me by running!" the little creature teased, swinging its sack. "The only way to get your numbers back is to SOLVE my puzzles! Each answer unlocks a number from my sack." Liam skidded to a stop, panting hard. "Puzzles?" he groaned. "I'm a runner, not a thinker!"
The Number Thief snapped its tiny fingers, and a glowing chalkboard appeared in the air. It read: 9 - __ = 4. "Find the missing number," the creature sang, "or it stays in my sack FOREVER!" Liam stared at the problem. His first instinct was to guess. "Uh... three?" The chalkboard buzzed red and the Number Thief cackled. Liam frowned and took a deep breath. "Okay, okay. Slow down, Liam," he whispered to himself. "Nine minus SOMETHING equals four. What got taken away?"
Liam held up nine fingers. Then he slowly folded them down, one at a time, counting backward. "Nine... eight... seven... six... five... four. STOP!" He looked at his folded fingers. Five of them were tucked in. "FIVE!" he yelled. "Nine minus FIVE equals four!" The glowing chalkboard flashed bright gold, and a shiny number 5 burst out of the Number Thief's sack and zoomed back onto the golden number line. The Number Thief's eyes went wide. "Lucky guess!" it huffed.
"That wasn't luck," Liam said, standing a little taller. "That was thinking." The Number Thief growled and snapped its fingers again. A new problem appeared on the glowing chalkboard: 12 - __ = 7. This one was harder. Liam couldn't count on his fingers past ten! But he didn't panic. He looked at the golden number line beneath his feet. He found 12. Then he walked carefully, step by step, all the way to 7. "One... two... three... four... five steps!" he counted. "The answer is five!"
FLASH! Another glowing number burst free from the sack. The Number Thief stomped its tiny feet on the golden number line. "STOP THAT!" it shrieked. "Fine! Try THIS one!" The glowing chalkboard shimmered and showed the trickiest problem yet: __ - 6 = 8. Liam blinked. The missing number wasn't in the middle this time. It was at the very beginning! "Oh no," he muttered. He sat down right on the number line and thought. "If I took away six and ended up with eight... then I need to put them back together. Six plus eight is... fourteen! The missing number is FOURTEEN!"
The glowing chalkboard exploded with golden light! Numbers came pouring out of the Number Thief's sack like a fountain of rainbow confetti — threes and sevens and nines and twos — all swirling through the purple sky and landing back in their proper places on the golden number line. "NOOOOO!" the Number Thief wailed, clutching its now-empty burlap sack. "You figured out my secret! Subtraction is just finding what's been taken away, and you can't steal what someone understands!" The little creature shrank smaller and smaller until it was no bigger than a pencil eraser, then vanished with a tiny POP.
The purple sky swirled like a whirlpool, and suddenly Liam was back in his classroom chair. His math workbook was open in front of him — and every single number was right where it belonged. His classmates blinked and rubbed their eyes. "Did that really happen?" a girl in the front row whispered. Liam looked at his workbook. 9 - 5 = 4. He grinned. He knew that one. He picked up his pencil and, for the very first time, started his math problems slowly and carefully, thinking through each one step by step.
When the bell rang for recess, Liam still zoomed out the door at top speed — some things never change. But as he ran past the chalkboard, he noticed something small scratched into the corner. A tiny curly tail, drawn in chalk. Liam laughed his biggest, loudest laugh. "You better not come back!" he called out. "Because now I know the secret. Subtraction is just figuring out what's been taken away — and I'll ALWAYS figure it out!" Then he ran outside into the sunshine, fast as ever, but a whole lot smarter too.
