Mei loved to draw more than anything in the whole world. Every day after school, she raced to her colorful bedroom, flopped into her chair, and opened her favorite sketchbook. Her messy desk was covered in crayons, markers, and little doodles she had made. Today, she picked up a bright blue marker and started drawing a picture of herself — a tiny version with big eyes, wild hair, and a huge smile.
Mei paused and pressed her hand against her chest. She could feel a gentle thump, thump, thump under her fingers. "What's going on inside my body right now?" she whispered. She looked down at her little drawing. The tiny sketch version of herself stared back with those big round eyes. Then — something impossible happened. The little drawing winked!
"Come on!" squeaked a tiny voice. Sketch Mei jumped right off the page and landed on the desk, sending crayons rolling everywhere. She was small as a mouse, drawn in wobbly blue lines, and buzzing with energy. "You want to know what's inside your body?" Sketch Mei giggled. "Then let's GO!" She grabbed Mei's finger, and suddenly the whole room began to spin and swirl like watercolors mixing in a puddle.
When the swirling stopped, Mei gasped. She was standing inside a glowing red tunnel that stretched out in both directions. The walls pulsed and squeezed around her like a giant was gently clapping. BOOM-boom. BOOM-boom. The sound echoed everywhere. "Welcome to your heart!" Sketch Mei announced proudly. "It's a muscle about the size of your fist, and it pumps blood all through your body — like a strong drum that never, ever stops!"
Mei reached out and touched the tunnel wall. It was warm and smooth, and she could feel it squeeze and relax, squeeze and relax. "Your heart beats about one hundred thousand times every single day," Sketch Mei explained, hopping along the tunnel floor. "It pushes blood through tubes called blood vessels to carry oxygen and energy to every part of you — your toes, your fingers, even your brain!" Mei's eyes grew wide. "One hundred thousand times? That's incredible!" she said.
Sketch Mei led the way through a doorway, and suddenly the world changed. They floated into a huge, soft, pink space that gently expanded and shrank around them. It felt like standing inside a giant balloon. "These are your lungs!" Sketch Mei said, bouncing on the spongy floor. "When you breathe in, they fill up with fresh air. When you breathe out, they push out the old air your body doesn't need anymore." Mei took a deep breath, and the whole pink room grew bigger around her!
"Your lungs work together with your heart," Sketch Mei continued, doing a little cartwheel. "The air you breathe has oxygen in it. Your lungs grab that oxygen and pass it to your blood, and then your heart pumps that blood everywhere!" Mei giggled as she bounced on the spongy floor. "So my heart and lungs are a team?" she asked. "The best team ever!" Sketch Mei cheered. "Now come on — we still have one more amazing place to see!"
They whooshed through a sparkling, electric hallway that crackled with light. Tiny bolts of lightning zipped past Mei's ears, zooming in every direction like the fastest race cars she had ever seen. "This is your brain!" Sketch Mei shouted over the buzzing. "It sends messages through your whole body using things called nerves. Those messages move super fast — like tiny lightning bolts! Your brain tells your legs to walk, your mouth to talk, and your hand to draw!"
"Your brain is the boss of your whole body," Sketch Mei said, tapping her tiny blue-line head. "It even helps you feel happy, or scared, or curious — like you are right now!" Mei laughed. But then she looked down and her smile faded. Sketch Mei's legs were getting lighter. Her blue lines were starting to disappear! "Oh no!" Mei cried. "What's happening to you?" Sketch Mei looked at her fading hands. "You — you never finished drawing me," she whispered. "I'm fading away."
Mei's heart pounded hard. Her hands started to shake, and tears stung her eyes. But then she remembered everything she had just learned. "Okay, okay," Mei said to herself. "My brain can make a plan. My lungs can help me calm down. My heart will keep me strong." She closed her eyes and took three slow, deep breaths — in through her nose, out through her mouth — just like her lungs had shown her. She felt her hands stop shaking. She opened her eyes. "I need my sketchbook," she said firmly. "NOW."
In a flash of swirling color, Mei was back at her messy desk. Her sketchbook was still open. Sketch Mei lay on the page, barely visible — just a ghost of faint blue lines. Mei grabbed her marker with steady hands. Her heart thumped with courage. Her brain told her fingers exactly where to draw. She sketched fast — filling in Sketch Mei's shoes, her arms, her wild hair, and her big, bright smile. "Come back," Mei whispered. "Please come back." And just like that, Sketch Mei's lines grew dark and bold again. She sat up on the page and grinned. "You did it!" she cheered.
Mei leaned back in her chair and let out a long, happy breath. She looked down at Sketch Mei, who gave her one last wink before settling back into the page, still and peaceful. Mei smiled and flipped to a fresh page. She began to draw — the thumping red heart, the soft pink lungs, and the electric, sparkling brain. She filled page after page with drawings of every incredible thing inside her. "My body," Mei said quietly, "is the most amazing thing I've ever seen." And she never, ever left a drawing unfinished again.
