Hana loved to dance. Every single morning, she twirled and spun across the checkered tile floor of her bright, cozy kitchen. The warm sunlight streamed through the window and made golden squares on the ground, and Hana pretended they were her own special stage.
One Tuesday morning, Hana danced into the kitchen and stopped. Something new was sitting right there on the counter. It was a golden machine, about the size of a toaster, covered in tiny buttons and little spinning gears. A small sign on the front read: THE SENTENCE BUILDER.
"Where did you come from?" Hana whispered, leaning close. The machine hummed softly, as if it were waiting for her. She pressed a bright red button on the side. CLICK! CLACK! WHIRRRR! The gears began to spin, and out floated a glowing sentence, drifting through the air like a shimmering bubble: THE CAT SAT ON THE SOFT PILLOW.
"Oh my!" Hana gasped. The glowing words drifted past her nose and popped like a soap bubble, leaving tiny sparkles behind. She clapped her hands and pressed the button again. CLICK! CLACK! WHIRRRR! A new sentence floated out: THE DOG RAN THROUGH THE MUDDY PUDDLE. Hana giggled and danced around the kitchen, chasing the bright, floating words.
Hana wanted to try building her own sentence. She found three slots on top of the machine. Each slot had a label. The first one said SUBJECT — that means who or what the sentence is about. The second said VERB — that means the action word, what the subject does. The third said DETAILS — that means extra words that tell more. "It's like a recipe!" said Hana, bouncing on her toes.
Hana picked up the tiny letter tiles from a little tray beside the machine. She slid THE BIRD into the SUBJECT slot. Then she slid OVER THE RAINBOW into the DETAILS slot. "There!" she said proudly, and pressed the red button. CLICK... CLACK... CLUNK! The machine groaned. It shook. It sputtered. But nothing floated out. Not one single glowing word.
"Oh no!" Hana cried. The machine made a terrible grinding sound, and then it went completely silent. She looked at the slots again. SUBJECT: THE BIRD. VERB: empty. DETAILS: OVER THE RAINBOW. "Wait a minute," Hana said slowly, tapping her chin. "I forgot the verb! The bird does what over the rainbow? The sentence doesn't make sense without an action word!"
Hana thought hard. What do birds do? They fly! She picked up the tile that said FLEW and did a little spin before sliding it into the VERB slot. "The subject tells who," she said. "The verb tells what they do. And the details tell more about it!" She pressed the red button and held her breath. CLICK! CLACK! WHIRRRR! Out floated a beautiful, glowing sentence: THE BIRD FLEW OVER THE RAINBOW.
"Yes! That's it!" Hana cheered. She danced across the checkered floor and grabbed more tiles. This time, she was careful to fill every slot. SUBJECT: HANA. VERB: DANCED. DETAILS: ACROSS THE SUNNY KITCHEN. CLICK! CLACK! WHIRRRR! The sentence burst out in sparkling pink letters and swirled around her like a ribbon. And right then, Hana's feet started moving all on their own!
"The sentences come alive!" Hana laughed. She built sentence after sentence, making sure each one had a subject, a verb, and details. THE FLOWERS BLOOMED IN THE GARDEN floated out in purple. THE RAIN FELL ON THE OLD ROOFTOP drifted by in silver. THE FRIENDS LAUGHED AT THE SILLY JOKE burst out in orange. Every complete sentence shimmered and glowed, filling her kitchen with color.
Hana tried one more. She slid in STARS and ABOVE THE SLEEPY TOWN but paused at the VERB slot. "What do stars do?" she wondered, tapping her foot to a beat only she could hear. Then she smiled. "They twinkle!" She slid TWINKLED into place and pressed the button. CLICK! CLACK! WHIRRRR! STARS TWINKLED ABOVE THE SLEEPY TOWN floated out in soft, silvery white, and the whole kitchen sparkled like a sky full of stars.
Hana twirled one last time through the sparkling kitchen, surrounded by all her beautiful, glowing sentences. "Every sentence needs a who, a do, and a clue!" she sang, making up her own little rhyme. She patted the golden machine gently. "Thank you, Sentence Builder." From that day on, whenever Hana wrote a sentence, she always remembered — a subject, a verb, and the details are what make words come alive.
