Hana loved two things more than anything in the world: dancing and her grandmother's kitchen. Every afternoon, she'd toss her backpack onto the checkered tile floor, crank up the old radio on the counter, and let the music carry her between the stove and the table. She'd pirouette past the copper pots, shimmy around the flour-dusted countertops, and slide across the tiles in her socks like the kitchen was her own private stage. The chalkboard menu on the wall kept a running list of her grandmother's catering specials, and the whole room always smelled like cinnamon and warm bread. It was the one place where Hana felt completely, unshakably herself.
But that morning at school, Hana had not felt like herself at all. Her teacher had announced a timed multiplication challenge — twenty multi-digit problems in five minutes. "Ready? Go!" the teacher called, and the classroom erupted in the frantic scratching of pencils. Hana stared at the first problem: 47 × 63. The digits seemed to blur together, growing larger and more tangled the longer she looked. Her pencil hovered over the paper, but her mind went completely blank. Around her, classmates scribbled furiously, flipping their sheets with confident snaps. By the time the timer buzzed, Hana had answered only six problems — and she wasn't even sure those were right.
"Don't worry," her best friend whispered as they filed out of class. "We get to retake it on Friday." But Hana's stomach knotted at the thought. Hana said, a spark of surprise in her voice.
"Now add them together," her grandmother said. Hana wrote on the board: 3,600 + 720 + 144. She worked through it carefully. "4,464 grams of flour!" she announced, and then converted it. "That's about 4 and a half kilograms, right?" Her grandmother grinned. "Exactly right. You see? You just solved a problem with three-digit multiplication, and you didn't freeze once." Hana stared at the chalkboard. It was the same kind of problem that had paralyzed her that morning — but broken into pieces, each step had been simple. Place value, she realized. Each digit has a value based on its position: hundreds, tens, ones. And when you multiply each part separately, those are called partial products. It wasn't magic. It was a pattern.
A cumbia song burst from the radio, and Hana's feet started moving before she could stop them. She slid across the checkered tiles, twirling with the mixing bowl still in her hands. For the rest of the evening, Hana and her grandmother baked and calculated, danced and multiplied. With every batch of empanadas, Hana tackled a new problem. She discovered that multiplying by tens just meant adding a zero — 36 × 10 = 360, 36 × 100 = 3,600 — because each zero shifted the digits one more place to the left. She found that doubling and halving could simplify tricky problems: 25 × 48 was the same as 50 × 24, which was 1,200. Every pattern she uncovered felt like learning a new dance move, and soon she was chaining them together into smooth, confident combinations. By the time the last tray of empanadas came out of the oven, the chalkboard was covered in equations — and Hana was grinning from ear to ear.
On Friday, Hana sat down for the retake with a calm she hadn't expected. When the teacher said, "Go!" the first problem was 238 × 45. Instead of panicking, Hana heard the rhythm in her head — the same beat she'd danced to all week. She broke 238 into 200 + 30 + 8. Hana pinned the test to the wall right next to the chalkboard menu, between a copper pot and a recipe card. She realized something important that day: big problems only seem impossible when you stare at them whole. But when you break them into steps — whether it's a dance, a recipe, or a three-digit multiplication problem — each piece is something you already know how to do. And that discovery? That was better than any grade on any test.
