The sun goes down. Down, down, down. The sky turns soft and dark. It is night. Little Amara sits on her bed and looks out the big window. So many stars! "Hello, night," she says.
Amara listens. What does she hear? Whoooosh! Whoooosh! It is the wind! The wind blows through the trees. It swooshes past the window. "I hear you, wind!" says Amara.
Amara puts her finger to her lips. "Shhh, wind. Shhh." The wind listens. It blows softer… and softer… and softer. Whoosh… whoosh… hush. The wind is quiet now.
Amara listens again. What does she hear now? Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! It is an owl! The owl sits in a tree outside. "I hear you, owl!" says Amara.
Amara waves to the owl. "Shhh, owl. Shhh. Time to rest." The owl blinks its big round eyes. It tucks its head under its wing. Hoo… hoo… hush. The owl is quiet now.
Amara listens one more time. What does she hear? Chirp, chirp, chirp! It is the crickets! So many little crickets singing in the grass. "I hear you, crickets!" says Amara.
Amara whispers very softly. "Shhh, crickets. Shhh. Time to sleep." The crickets listen. They chirp slower… and slower… chirp… chirp… hush. The crickets are quiet now.
Now everything is so still. No whooshing wind. No hooting owl. No chirping crickets. The world is quiet. Amara smiles. "So quiet," she whispers.
But wait! Amara hears one more sound. It is tiny. It is sweet. Hmmm… hmmm… hmmm. What is it? Amara looks up at the big round moon. The moon is humming! A little lullaby, just for her.
The moon hums so softly. Hmmm… hmmm… hmmm. It is the sweetest sound. Amara feels warm. She feels sleepy. She pulls her fluffy blankets up to her chin.
Amara closes her eyes. She whispers very, very softly. "Goodnight, wind. Goodnight, owl. Goodnight, crickets. Goodnight, moon." Hmmm… hmmm… hush. The last little hum fades away.
The world is still. The stars shine soft. Amara sleeps. And now, little one… close your eyes too. Shhh. Goodnight, baby. Goodnight.
