Mei loved to draw. She carried her sketchbook everywhere she went. She drew flowers. She drew birds. She drew fluffy clouds in the sky. Today, Mei had a new place to visit!
Mei walked into the apple orchard. The trees were tall and leafy. Shiny red apples and bright green apples hung from every branch. "Oh, wow!" said Mei. "This is so beautiful!"
A gentle breeze blew through the orchard. The leaves danced and shimmered in the warm afternoon light. Soft grass stretched under the trees, dotted with little wildflowers. Mei sat down and opened her sketchbook.
Mei drew the big, friendly apple tree in front of her. She drew its thick trunk and its wide, leafy branches. "You are a very nice tree," Mei said. The leaves rustled, almost like the tree was saying thank you!
Then Mei spotted something wonderful. Two shiny red apples hung low on a branch, right where she could reach them! "I will pick you," she said. She reached up and picked one red apple. Then she picked the other red apple. Pluck, pluck!
Mei looked up again. She saw three bright green apples hanging together on another branch. "Oh! Green ones too!" she said. She picked one, then two, then three green apples. Pluck, pluck, pluck!
Mei set all her apples down on the soft grass. She sat next to them and opened her sketchbook to a fresh page. "I want to draw all of my apples," she said. "But how many do I have in all?"
Mei thought and thought. She looked at her red apples. "I have two red apples," she said. Then she looked at her green apples. "And I have three green apples." She tapped her chin. "How do I find out how many that is together?"
Then Mei had an idea. "I can add them up!" she said. She pointed to each apple, one at a time. "One, two," she counted the red ones. "Three, four, five!" she counted the green ones. "Two plus three makes five! I have five apples in all!"
Mei picked up her pencil and began to draw. She drew two round red apples and three round green apples on her page. She counted her drawings. "One, two, three, four, five! That is right!" Addition helped her know just how many to draw.
"Addition is like magic!" Mei said. "It helps me add up all the little treasures I find." She looked around the orchard and smiled. Two butterflies flew by, and three birds sang in the tree. "Two plus three is five again!" she laughed.
Mei walked home with her five apples and her sketchbook full of new drawings. She knew that addition could help her count up all of life's little treasures — apples, butterflies, birds, and so much more. "I cannot wait to add up more tomorrow!" said Mei.
