Jamal liked quiet afternoons. He liked to sit and think. He liked to play chess and watch the clouds roll by. But today, the sun was warm and the sky was bright blue. "I think I will take a walk," said Jamal.
Jamal followed the trail through a big green meadow. The grass swayed in the breeze. Butterflies danced from flower to flower. "This is so peaceful," Jamal whispered. He walked slowly, looking all around.
Soon, Jamal came to a shimmering pond with green lily pads floating on top. He heard a sound. Quack, quack, quack! A mama duck swam across the pond. Behind her, five fuzzy ducklings paddled in a row. Paddle, paddle, paddle!
"Who takes care of you?" Jamal asked the little ducklings. Mama Duck fluffed her feathers and quacked proudly. She showed Jamal how she kept her babies close. The ducklings swam right behind her, safe and warm. "You are a good mama," said Jamal with a smile.
Jamal waved goodbye to the ducks and followed the trail into a gentle forest. The tall trees made cool shade. Soft moss covered the ground like a green carpet. Jamal stepped carefully on the mossy path.
Tumble, tumble, roll! Two tiny bear cubs played near a big log. They wrestled and tumbled in the soft leaves. A big papa bear sat close by, watching them carefully. He let out a deep, rumbling hum.
"Who takes care of you?" Jamal asked the little cubs. Papa Bear stood up tall. He showed Jamal how he watched over his cubs. He kept them safe in the woods. "You are a good papa," said Jamal. The cubs tumbled and played some more.
Jamal walked a little farther and heard a new sound. Chirp, chirp, chirp! He looked up. High in a tree, a cozy nest sat on a sturdy branch. Three baby birds peeked over the edge. A mama bird flew in with food in her beak.
"Who takes care of you?" Jamal asked the baby birds. Mama Bird fed each baby, one by one. She tucked them under her soft wings to keep them warm. "Every family has a way to care for their little ones," Jamal said to himself.
As Jamal walked on, he saw something small and soft near the path. A little bunny sat all alone, wiggling its nose. It looked lost. "Oh no," said Jamal softly. "Where is your family, little bunny?" The bunny's ears drooped down.
Jamal looked around carefully. He thought and thought, just like when he played chess. Then he spotted a small hole under a bush nearby. "Is that your home?" he asked. He gently helped the little bunny hop, hop, hop to the burrow. Two bigger bunnies popped out! The lost bunny wiggled its nose and hopped inside.
Jamal smiled a big, warm smile. Every family he met today had a way to keep their babies safe and loved—ducks, bears, birds, and bunnies. "Every creature has a home and someone who cares for them," said Jamal. "Just like me." He turned and followed the trail back home, where his own family was waiting.
