Mateo loved to build things with his hands. He built tall towers with blocks. He built long bridges with sticks. Today, Mateo was going to the park!
Mateo walked along the winding stone path. He looked all around. "Wow!" said Mateo. "This park is so... so..." He wanted to say more, but he did not know how.
Mateo bent down and touched the grass. It tickled his fingers! "This grass is soft," he said. "Soft grass!" The word felt good to say. Soft, soft, soft!
Mateo looked up, up, up. The trees stretched high into the sky. Their branches swayed in the breeze. "Those trees are tall!" said Mateo. "Tall trees!" Tall, tall, tall!
Mateo skipped down the path to the pond. The water sparkled in the sun. Friendly ducks swam across it. "That pond is shiny!" said Mateo. "A shiny pond!" Shiny, shiny, shiny!
Mateo kept finding more words! The wildflowers were colorful. The stone path was bumpy. The ducks were fuzzy. Every word made the park feel more alive!
Then Mateo saw a friend sitting on a bench by the pond. "Come sit with me!" said his friend. "Tell me about the park!"
Mateo opened his mouth. "The park has grass," he said. "And trees. And a pond." His friend tilted her head. "That sounds nice," she said. "But what is it like?"
Mateo frowned. His words felt plain, like a tower with no color. He wanted to build a picture with words! "I know what to do," said Mateo. "Come with me!"
Mateo led his friend along the winding stone path. He touched the grass. "Feel this! It is soft grass!" He pointed up. "Look! Those are tall trees!" He showed her the water. "See? A shiny pond!"
His friend clapped her hands. "Now I can see it!" she said. "Soft grass, tall trees, and a shiny pond! Your words are like magic!" Mateo grinned. "Describing words help me build pictures — just like I build things with my hands!"
From that day on, Mateo used describing words everywhere he went. Crunchy leaves! Fluffy clouds! Tiny bugs! The whole world felt brighter when he found just the right word. And that was the most wonderful thing of all.
