Ezra loved to read. Every morning, he sat under his favorite big oak tree with curly branches. He leaned against its bumpy trunk and opened his book. "This is my best spot," said Ezra with a happy sigh.
The sun was warm. The grass swayed in the breeze. But Ezra did not look up. He turned page after page. "I don't need to go anywhere," he said. "Everything I need is right here in my book."
Then something tiny and sparkly landed right on the page! It was a little ladybug with bright red wings and shiny silver spots that glittered in the sun. "Oh!" said Ezra. "Hello there, little ladybug!"
The sparkly ladybug fluttered its little wings and flew toward the garden. It stopped and looked back, as if to say, "Follow me!" Ezra was not sure. He hugged his book tight. "But I like it here," he whispered. The ladybug twinkled in the sunlight. Ezra took a deep breath. "Okay," he said. "I will come."
The sparkly ladybug led Ezra to the bright red poppies first. Their petals were as red as apples! "I can SEE so many colors!" said Ezra. He looked all around. There were cheerful yellow sunflowers standing tall, and soft purple lavender dancing in the breeze. Red, yellow, purple—the garden was like a rainbow!
Then Ezra stopped and listened. Tweet, tweet, tweet! A bird sang a sweet song from a leafy branch above. Chirp, chirp, chirp! Another bird joined in. "I can HEAR the birds singing!" said Ezra. He closed his eyes and smiled. The meadow was full of music.
The sparkly ladybug flew to a big yellow sunflower. Ezra reached out his hand. He touched the petals. They were soft and velvety, like a cozy blanket. "I can TOUCH the flowers!" said Ezra. "They feel so smooth and gentle." He giggled and touched another one.
Next, the sparkly ladybug landed on a bunch of soft purple lavender. Ezra leaned in close. He took a big sniff. "Mmm!" said Ezra. "I can SMELL the lavender! It is sweet and lovely." The gentle breeze carried the scent all around him, and Ezra breathed it in again and again.
The sparkly ladybug flew a little farther. It landed on something small and red, hidden in the tall grass. "What is that?" asked Ezra. He knelt down and found a patch of juicy red strawberries! He picked one and took a bite. "I can TASTE it!" he said. "It is sweet and yummy!"
Ezra stood up and looked around. He had used all five senses! He could see the bright colors. He could hear the birds. He could touch the soft petals. He could smell the sweet lavender. And he could taste the juicy strawberry. "The world is amazing!" said Ezra.
The sparkly ladybug led Ezra back to his cozy spot under the big oak tree with curly branches. Ezra sat down and opened his book. But now, something was different. When he read about flowers, he could almost smell them. When he read about birds, he could almost hear them sing.
"Thank you, little ladybug," said Ezra softly. The sparkly ladybug fluttered its bright red wings and flew away into the golden meadow. Ezra smiled and turned the page. The words felt more alive than ever before. And from that day on, Ezra still loved to read—but he also loved to explore the wonderful world all around him.
