Ezra lived in a bright little town with colorful houses and friendly streets. His favorite spot in the whole wide world was under the tall oak tree in his backyard. Every day, he sat in the cool shade and read his favorite books.
One sunny morning, Ezra opened a new book. It was a story about a little bear who helped everyone in the forest. The bear shared berries, carried sticks, and told funny jokes to cheer up his friends. "Wow," said Ezra. "Helping others makes the world a better place!"
Ezra closed the book and hugged it tight. "I want to help, too!" he said. He put the book into his backpack and headed off to school. His feet went skip, skip, skip down the sunny sidewalk.
At school, Ezra saw a friend sitting at a table. Her crayons had tumbled off and rolled all over the floor! "Oh no!" she said with a frown. Ezra bent down and picked up every single crayon—red, blue, yellow, and green.
"Here you go!" said Ezra, placing the crayons back on the table. "Thank you, Ezra!" said his friend with a big smile. Helping felt warm and good, like sunshine in his chest. Help, help, help—Ezra wanted to help some more!
After school, Ezra went home. Mom was carrying two big bags of groceries from the car. They looked heavy! "Can I help, Mom?" asked Ezra. "That would be wonderful!" said Mom.
Ezra carried a bag all the way to the kitchen. Step, step, step—he was careful not to drop it. "You are such a good helper," said Mom, giving him a hug. Ezra smiled. Helping Mom felt just as good as helping his friend at school!
Later that day, Ezra walked down the street and saw a lonely neighbor sitting on her porch. She looked a little sad. "Would you like me to read you a story?" asked Ezra. "Oh, I would love that!" said the neighbor, her eyes lighting up.
Ezra reached into his backpack to find his special book. He looked and looked, but it was not there! "Oh no!" said Ezra. "My book is gone!" His heart felt heavy, like a rock in his chest. Where could it be?
Ezra walked home slowly. He looked on the sidewalk. He looked by the car. He looked in the kitchen. But his special book was nowhere to be found. Ezra sat under his tall oak tree and felt very sad.
Then Ezra heard footsteps. Skip, skip, skip! His friend from school, Mom, and the lonely neighbor all came walking into the backyard. His friend held up something and said, "We found your book, Ezra! It was on the playground!" They had all worked together to find it.
Ezra hugged his book and smiled the biggest smile. "Thank you!" he said. Then he sat under the tall oak tree and read his story to all of them. Ezra learned that when you share kindness with others, kindness always finds its way back to you—and makes the whole world a little brighter.
