Kai opened his eyes and stretched his arms wide. Sunshine poured through his window like warm honey. He could hear the ocean waves going swoosh, swoosh, swoosh outside. "Today is a surfing day!" Kai said with a big grin.
Kai jumped out of bed and ran to the porch. His surfboard was leaning against the railing, ready to go. Sandy the cat was napping by the door, purring softly. The beach sparkled under the warm blue sky.
Kai started walking toward the water. But then he stopped. He saw a crumpled paper cup and a plastic bag sitting on the sand. "That does not belong on the beach," Kai said. "The ocean animals need clean water."
Kai picked up the cup and the bag. He found a few more pieces of trash too. He put them all in a big green bin by the sidewalk. "There!" said Kai. "Now the beach looks beautiful again." He felt a happy glow inside, like a little sun in his chest.
Kai walked along the sidewalk lined with seashells. He passed the colorful cottages—pink, yellow, and blue. Then he saw a little sign on a neighbor's door. It said: PLEASE FEED BUBBLES. "Oh!" said Kai. "My neighbor must be away today."
Kai went inside and found Bubbles the fish swimming in a round glass bowl. Bubbles was orange with one white stripe. "Hi, Bubbles!" said Kai. "Are you hungry?" He sprinkled a tiny pinch of fish food into the water. Bubbles swam in happy circles.
Kai waved goodbye to Bubbles and headed home. His smile was bigger now. Helping felt good, like finding a perfect seashell in the sand. He started to skip. "Help, help, helping all day! Helping makes the sunshine stay!" he sang.
When Kai got home, his mom was in the kitchen making sandwiches for lunch. "Can I help?" Kai asked. "Yes, please!" said his mom. "Can you set the table?" Kai nodded and got right to work.
Kai put out the plates—one, two, three. He set down the cups—one, two, three. He folded the napkins and placed them just right. "What a wonderful helper you are!" his mom said, giving him a big hug.
After lunch, the sun began to sink lower in the sky. It painted the clouds orange and pink. "Now it is time to surf!" said Kai. He grabbed his surfboard and ran across the warm sand toward the glowing water.
Kai paddled out and caught a wave. Whoooosh! He stood up on his surfboard and rode it all the way to shore. The water sparkled gold in the sunset light. "Wow!" Kai laughed. It felt amazing. But something felt even better.
Kai sat on the sand and watched the last bit of sun dip below the sea. Sandy the cat curled up next to him and purred. Kai thought about his day—the clean beach, happy Bubbles, and his mom's big hug. "Surfing is great," Kai whispered. "But helping others made today the best day ever."
