Kai loved the ocean. Every day, he rode his surfboard on the big blue waves. One morning, something bumped his board. Bump, bump, bump! It was a glass bottle with a rolled-up paper inside. "What is this?" said Kai. He pulled out the paper and saw a colorful map. It showed a sandy path that curved from the letter A all the way to the letter Z!
Kai followed the map to the edge of the jungle. A big wooden sign said A, painted in rainbow colors. Tall green grass swayed in the warm breeze. "An alphabet safari!" said Kai. "I wonder what I will find!" He stepped onto the sandy path and heard a sound. "Aaa! Aaa!" An alligator was smiling by a sparkling watering hole. "A is for alligator!" said Kai. "A says aaa!"
Kai walked deeper into the jungle. He passed signs for B, C, and D. A bear buzzed like a bee. "B says buh!" A cat climbed a coconut tree. "C says cuh!" A dolphin danced in a watering hole. "D says duh!" Each animal showed Kai its special letter sound. "This is so fun!" said Kai. He looked at his map and kept going.
The path curved past more rainbow signs. An elephant ate with E. A fox flipped with F. A goat giggled with G. "E says eh! F says fff! G says guh!" said Kai. He was learning so many sounds! A hippo hopped for H. An iguana inched along for I. A jaguar jumped for J. "H says huh! I says ih! J says juh!" Kai cheered.
Next came K, L, and M! A kangaroo kicked a ball. "K says kuh!" A lion laughed out loud. "Ha ha ha! L says lll!" said Kai, laughing too. Then a monkey munched on a banana. Munch, munch, munch! "M says mmm!" said Kai, rubbing his tummy. He held his map tight and smiled. He was halfway through the alphabet!
Kai looked at his map as he walked toward the letter N. But then—WHOOOOSH! A big gust of wind blew the map right out of his hands! It flew up, up, up into the treetops. "Oh no!" cried Kai. "My map! I need my map!" He jumped and reached, but it was too high. Kai sat down on a rock. "Now I am stuck," he said sadly. "I do not know which way to go."
Kai thought and thought. Then he had an idea! "I know my letter sounds!" he said. He stood up tall and called out each one. "Aaa! Buh! Cuh! Duh! Eh! Fff! Guh! Huh! Ih! Juh! Kuh! Lll! Mmm!" His voice rang through the jungle. He sounded out every letter he had learned. Could his animal friends hear him?
It worked! The animals came running, flying, and leaping! The alligator carried the map in its mouth. The monkey swung from tree to tree to bring it closer. The lion caught it with one big paw. "Here you go!" they all seemed to say. Kai hugged the map. "Thank you, friends! You heard my sounds!" The animals cheered. Kai was not stuck anymore!
Kai hurried down the path. A newt nibbled for N. "N says nnn!" An owl hooted for O. A parrot played for P. A quail was quiet for Q. "O says ah! P says puh! Q says kwuh!" said Kai. A rabbit ran for R, and a snake slithered and hissed for S. "R says rrr! S says sss!" Kai was getting closer to the end!
Almost there! A turtle tiptoed for T. A colorful bird flew under an umbrella-shaped tree for U. A vulture sang a verse for V. A walrus waddled for W. "T says tuh! U says uh! V says vvv! W says wuh!" said Kai. He could see the end of the trail now. Just three more letters to go!
Kai ran to the last three signs. A fox played a xylophone for X. "X says ks!" A yak yawned a big yawn for Y. "Y says yuh!" And last of all, a zebra zigzagged across the path for Z. "Z says zzz!" shouted Kai. "I did it! I learned every letter from A to Z!" All the animals gathered around and roared, sang, and cheered for Kai.
Kai followed the path back to the beach. His surfboard was waiting in the sand. He paddled out and caught the biggest wave he had ever seen! As he rode it all the way home, he shouted every sound. "Aaa! Buh! Cuh! Duh!" all the way to "Zzz!" The ocean splashed, and Kai laughed. He could roar like a lion, sing like a bird, and read with every letter. What a safari!
