Mateo stands in the middle of a bright, cozy classroom, grinning with excitement, holding a roll of tape in one hand and a small cardboard box in the other. Around him are colorful tables covered with craft supplies—boxes, glue sticks, and tape. In the background, wooden blocks are stacked on shelves, toy trucks are lined up on a windowsill, and a colorful reading rug is spread on the floor.

Mateo loved to build things. He used boxes, tape, and glue to make all sorts of creations. Today was building time in his bright, cozy classroom, and Mateo had a big idea.

Mateo kneels on the reading rug next to Biscuit, the class stuffed puppy, pointing at Biscuit with a big smile as if announcing his plan. Biscuit sits upright on the rug looking soft and floppy. In the background, stacks of colorful books and a low bookshelf line the wall.

"I am going to build a doghouse!" said Mateo. "A doghouse for Biscuit!" Biscuit was the class stuffed puppy. He sat on the reading rug, soft and floppy, waiting for a cozy home.

Mateo sits cross-legged on the classroom floor, holding up a small cardboard doghouse he just finished building. Scissors, tape, and scraps of cardboard are scattered around him. The small doghouse has a little arched doorway cut into the front. In the background, a colorful table with craft supplies and a bin of cardboard pieces.

Mateo got to work. Snip, snip, snip! He cut the cardboard. Fold, fold, fold! He shaped the walls. Tape, tape, tape! He stuck it all together. "All done!" he said proudly.

Mateo crouches down, trying to push Biscuit the stuffed puppy into the small cardboard doghouse. Biscuit is halfway in, with his floppy ears and head sticking out the top. Mateo looks surprised and a little worried. In the background, the colorful reading rug and a row of cubbies along the wall.

Mateo tried to put Biscuit inside. He pushed and squeezed, but Biscuit did not fit! "Oh no!" said Mateo. "The doghouse is too small!" Biscuit's floppy ears poked out the top.

Mateo stands next to the teacher, looking up at her with a curious, thoughtful expression. The teacher kneels beside him, smiling warmly and gesturing toward the small cardboard doghouse on the floor. Biscuit the stuffed puppy sits beside the doghouse. In the background, colorful tables and chairs and a sunny window.

Mateo's teacher came over. "That is a wonderful doghouse, Mateo," she said. "But how can we make sure it is big enough for Biscuit?" Mateo thought and thought. "I don't know," he said.

The teacher kneels on the reading rug, lining up five wooden blocks in a neat row next to Biscuit the stuffed puppy, who is lying on his side. Mateo crouches beside her, watching closely with wide, amazed eyes and counting along on his fingers. In the background, the reading rug's bright pattern and a basket of books.

"We can measure!" said the teacher. She picked up some wooden blocks. "Let's see how long Biscuit is." She lined the blocks up next to Biscuit. One, two, three, four, five blocks long! "Now we know," she said. "Biscuit is five blocks long."

Mateo sits at a colorful table, pressing his spread-out hand against a large, tall storybook lying flat, measuring its length. He is beaming with excitement. The teacher stands nearby, watching him with a proud smile and giving a thumbs up. In the background, stacks of colorful books and a bright poster on the classroom wall.

"Can I try?" asked Mateo. The teacher smiled. "Of course! You can also measure with your hands." Mateo spread his hand wide and placed it along a big book. One hand, two hands, three hands! "The book is three hands long!" he said.

Mateo stands at the edge of a colorful table, stretching a long piece of white string from one end of the table toward the other, his arms spread wide. The teacher stands at the opposite end of the table, holding the other end of the string and smiling. In the background, wooden blocks on shelves and toy trucks lined up on a low table.

Next, the teacher gave Mateo a piece of string. "You can measure with string too!" she said. Mateo stretched the string along the table. It went on and on! "Wow, the table is really long!" said Mateo. "Much longer than the book!"

Mateo sits on the floor with wooden blocks lined up next to a toy truck and then separately next to a classmate's shoe. The classmate, a friendly girl, sits across from him giggling and pointing at the blocks. Mateo holds up his fingers, counting. In the background, the reading rug and cubbies filled with backpacks.

Mateo measured everything! He measured a toy truck—two blocks long. He measured a friend's shoe—four blocks long. "The shoe is longer than the truck!" said Mateo. He was learning to compare what is big and small, long and short.

Mateo kneels on the floor next to Biscuit the stuffed puppy, carefully stacking wooden blocks beside Biscuit to measure his height, with another row of blocks alongside measuring length. Mateo has a determined, focused look on his face. A fresh piece of cardboard and scissors sit nearby. In the background, the colorful classroom tables and bright windows with sunlight streaming in.

Now Mateo was ready. He measured Biscuit again—five blocks long and three blocks tall. "I need to make the doghouse six blocks long and four blocks tall," he said. "That way Biscuit will have room to wiggle!"

Mateo throws his arms up in celebration, standing next to a bigger, neatly made cardboard doghouse with a wide arched doorway. Biscuit the stuffed puppy sits comfortably inside the new doghouse, fitting perfectly with room to spare. Mateo's face is full of pure joy. In the background, classmates clapping and the teacher smiling proudly near the colorful tables.

Snip, snip, snip! Fold, fold, fold! Tape, tape, tape! This time, Mateo measured as he built. When he was done, he put Biscuit inside. Biscuit fit perfectly! "It worked!" cheered Mateo. "Measuring helped me build it just right!"

Mateo stands in the center of the reading rug, handing out wooden blocks and pieces of string to a small group of happy classmates who are kneeling and sitting around him. Some classmates are already measuring books and shoes with blocks. Biscuit the stuffed puppy sits in his perfect new cardboard doghouse nearby. In the background, the bright, cozy classroom with colorful tables, bookshelves, and sunny windows.

Mateo's friends all wanted to try. He gave them blocks and string. They measured books, shoes, and even each other! "When you measure," said Mateo, "you can see what is big or small, long or short. Measuring helps you build things that are just the right size!"
