Kai woke up with a big smile. The sun was shining, and the ocean was calling! He pulled on his swim trunks and ran outside. "What a perfect beach day!" said Kai. The golden sand was warm under his feet, and the blue waves rolled in one after another.
Kai ran down to the water. Splash, splash, splash! The waves tickled his toes. "I am so fast!" he laughed. His legs pumped up and down as he raced along the shore. Running made his body feel strong and alive.
Next, Kai jumped over the little waves. Jump, jump, jump! Each time a wave came in, he leaped into the air. "Whee!" he shouted. His legs pushed him up high, and his arms swung to help him balance. Jumping was so much fun!
After all that running and jumping, Kai stopped and put his hand on his chest. Thump, thump, thump! His heart was beating very fast. "Wow," said Kai. "Why is my heart going so fast?" Just then, a friendly green sea turtle poked her head out of the water.
"Hello! My name is Shelly," said the sea turtle with a warm smile. "Your heart beats fast because it is working hard! It pumps blood all through your body. Blood carries energy to your legs and arms so you can run and jump." "So my heart helps me move?" asked Kai. "Yes!" said Shelly. "Your heart is like a little pump inside your chest."
Kai grabbed his surfboard and paddled out into the waves. He lay on his belly and used his arms to paddle. Pull, pull, pull! "Paddling uses lots of muscles," called Shelly, swimming beside him. "Your arms, your back, and even your tummy muscles all work together!" Kai felt strong as he glided over the water.
A wave lifted Kai up, and he rode it all the way to shore! "That was amazing!" he cheered. But now he was breathing very hard. Huff, huff, huff! "Why do I need to breathe so much?" he asked Shelly.
"Take a big, deep breath," said Shelly. Kai breathed in slowly through his nose. He could smell the salty sea air. "Your lungs are like two big balloons inside your chest," Shelly explained. "When you breathe in, they fill up with air. That air has something called oxygen, and your body needs oxygen to keep going!" Kai breathed out slowly. "Ahhh, that feels good," he said.
Kai felt better after his big breaths. He stretched his arms up high and wiggled his fingers. Then he touched his toes. "Stretching helps your muscles feel happy," said Shelly. "It keeps your body bendy and ready for more fun!" Kai twisted left, then right. Stretch, stretch, stretch!
Kai played some more. He dug in the sand and built a big castle. He splashed in the tide pools and found tiny crabs. But after a while, his arms felt heavy. His legs felt slow. He let out a big yawn. "I think my body is telling me something," said Kai.
"Your body is very smart," said Shelly gently. "When you feel tired, that means it is time to rest. Resting lets your muscles get strong again. It lets your heart slow down. Rest is just as important as playing!" Kai lay down on his soft beach towel under a shady palm tree. He closed his eyes and listened to the waves. Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh.
When Kai opened his eyes, he felt wonderful. "Thank you, Shelly," he said. "Today I learned that my body is amazing! My heart pumps, my lungs breathe, my muscles move, and rest makes me feel brand new." Shelly smiled. "Take good care of your body, Kai. It will always take good care of you!" And with a wave of her flipper, Shelly swam back into the sparkling sea.
