Kai standing barefoot on a sandy beach, smiling with his arms stretched wide, his hair blowing in the ocean breeze. Bright colorful surfboards lean against a wooden boardwalk railing nearby. In the background, a sparkling blue ocean with gentle waves under a bright sunny sky with a few wispy clouds.

Kai lived in a sunny town by the sea. Every morning, he could hear the waves go whoosh, whoosh, whoosh. He loved to run on the warm sand and watch the surfers ride the big blue waves. The salty breeze always made him smile.

Kai standing in front of his cheerful little schoolhouse, looking up with wonder at the American flag waving on a tall silver flagpole. His hand shades his eyes from the sun as he gazes upward. In the background, the cheerful little schoolhouse with a red door and the sparkling blue ocean visible just beyond it.

One breezy morning, Kai walked to school. He looked up and saw something big and beautiful. A flag! It was red, white, and blue, waving high on a tall silver pole. The wind made it dance and flutter against the sky. "Wow!" said Kai. "What does that flag mean?"

Kai sitting at a small wooden desk, looking up with wide eyes at his teacher, who stands beside a colorful poster of the American flag on the classroom wall and points to it with a warm smile. In the background, a bright and cheerful classroom with big windows letting in sunshine, crayon drawings pinned to the walls.

Inside the classroom, Kai's teacher smiled. "That is our country's flag," she said. "The red stripes stand for bravery. The white stripes stand for goodness. And the blue part with the stars stands for justice—that means being fair to everyone." Kai's eyes grew wide. "All of that is in one flag?" he asked.

Kai standing close to the colorful poster of the American flag on the classroom wall, pointing at the stripes and counting them with one finger, a big grin on his face. His teacher stands nearby, watching him with a proud smile. In the background, the bright and cheerful classroom with shelves of books and a globe on a table.

"Yes!" said his teacher. "The flag has fifty stars—one for each state in our country. And it has thirteen stripes for the very first thirteen states that came together long ago." Kai counted the stripes on the poster. "One, two, three..." He got all the way to thirteen! "That is a lot of stripes!" he laughed.

Kai standing proudly with his right hand placed over his heart, alongside a row of his classmates who are also standing with their hands on their hearts. They all face a small American flag at the front of the room. In the background, the bright and cheerful classroom with sunshine streaming through the big windows.

Then it was time to say the Pledge of Allegiance. All the children stood up. Kai put his right hand over his heart. "I pledge allegiance to the flag," they all said together. Kai felt something warm inside his chest. It felt good to say those special words with his friends.

Kai sitting cross-legged on a colorful rug on the classroom floor with his classmates gathered around their teacher, who sits in a low chair and speaks warmly to them. Kai has a thoughtful expression, one finger on his chin. In the background, the bright and cheerful classroom with a window showing a peek of the sparkling blue ocean outside.

"What does the pledge mean?" asked Kai. His teacher sat down with the children. "It means we promise to care for our country and for each other," she said. "We are all part of one big family." Kai liked that. He thought about how the ocean connects all the shores. Maybe the flag connects all the people!

Kai running joyfully along the wooden boardwalk, holding his little American flag on a thin wooden stick high above his head. His hair and the flag flutter in the ocean breeze. Colorful flags are strung above the boardwalk. In the background, the sandy beach and sparkling blue ocean with bright surfboards leaning against the boardwalk railing.

After school, Kai's teacher gave each child a small flag to keep. It was a little American flag on a thin wooden stick. Kai held it up high and ran along the boardwalk. Whoosh! The wind made his little flag flutter, just like the big one at school. "Look at me!" Kai cheered. "I have my very own flag!"

Kai reaching out with both hands, a shocked and sad expression on his face, as his little American flag on a thin wooden stick tumbles through the air above the sandy beach, carried by a gust of wind toward a row of bright surfboards. In the background, the sparkling blue ocean with whitecaps from the breezy wind and colorful flags fluttering overhead.

But then—whoooosh! A big gust of wind pulled the little flag right out of Kai's hand! It tumbled and twirled through the salty air. "Oh no!" cried Kai. "My flag!" He watched it fly over the sand and disappear behind a row of bright surfboards. Kai felt sad. He loved that little flag.

Kai crouching down on the sand and peering under the wooden boardwalk with a worried look, searching for his lost little flag. A friendly surfer carrying a yellow surfboard stands nearby, looking down at Kai with a kind expression. In the background, the sandy beach stretching toward the sparkling blue ocean under a bright sunny sky.

Kai searched behind the surfboards. No flag. He looked under the wooden boardwalk. No flag. He peeked inside a big sandy bucket. Still no flag! "Where did it go?" Kai said softly. A friendly surfer walking by stopped and asked, "What are you looking for?" "My little flag," said Kai. "The wind took it away."

Kai kneeling excitedly on the wet sand beside a small tide pool, pulling his little American flag on a thin wooden stick out of the sand with a huge joyful smile. The friendly surfer stands right behind him, smiling and giving a thumbs up with his free hand while holding his yellow surfboard with the other. In the background, gentle waves lapping at the shore and smooth rocks around the tide pool under the bright sunny sky.

The friendly surfer helped Kai look. They walked along the beach together. Then Kai saw something! A tiny corner of red, white, and blue was sticking out of the sand near a tide pool. "There it is!" Kai shouted. He picked up his little flag and brushed off the sand. "I found it! I found it!"

Kai standing on the beach, holding his little American flag on a thin wooden stick gently against his chest with both hands, eyes closed and a peaceful, proud smile on his face. The friendly surfer stands beside him with his yellow surfboard, smiling warmly down at Kai. In the background, a beautiful golden sunset beginning over the sparkling blue ocean, casting warm light across the sand.

The friendly surfer smiled. "You really love that flag," he said. Kai held it close to his heart. Then he had a thought. "Even when I lost the flag, I still felt proud inside," Kai said. "My teacher told me that holidays and celebrations bring people together—just like the ocean connects all the shores. I think pride is something you carry in your heart, not just in your hands."

Kai standing on the beach among a joyful crowd of townspeople, waving his little American flag on a thin wooden stick high in the air with a beaming smile. Colorful flags flutter on strings above the crowd. In the background, bright fireworks bursting in red, white, and blue over the sparkling ocean under a deep twilight sky.

That evening, the whole town gathered on the beach for a celebration. Colorful flags fluttered everywhere. People laughed and clapped and watched fireworks pop in the sky. Kai waved his little flag and cheered. He belonged here—with the waves, the sand, and all the people he loved. And that made his heart feel as big as the ocean.
