Liam loved to run fast. He loved to laugh loud. He loved to spin in circles until he fell down on the rug. Today was a special day at school. It was sharing time!
"Today we will share about our families," said the teacher. "Who cooks for you? Who reads to you? Who helps you?" Liam bounced up and down in his tiny chair. He had so much to say!
A boy with curly hair went first. "My grandma cooks rice and beans for me," he said. "She stirs the big pot and lets me taste it!" "Yum!" said Liam. "I love rice and beans!"
A girl with long braids went next. "My two dads read me a bedtime story every night," she said. "They do silly voices, and I laugh and laugh!" Liam giggled. He loved silly voices too.
Then it was Liam's turn! He jumped up so fast his chair wobbled. "My mom cooks pancakes on Saturdays!" he said. "My dad helps me tie my shoes. And my big sister reads to me before bed!"
"Pancakes! Pancakes!" Liam cheered, hopping on one foot. The class laughed. Liam took a bow. He loved making his friends smile.
Liam sat back down. He looked around the circle. That is when he saw his new friend sitting very still. She was not smiling. She was looking down at her hands. Liam felt a little tug in his heart.
"Are you okay?" Liam whispered. The new girl looked up. "My family is just me and my mom," she said softly. "It is not big like yours." A tiny tear sat on her cheek.
The teacher knelt down and smiled warmly. "Families come in all shapes and sizes," she said. "Some are big. Some are small. Some have grandmas or grandpas. Some have one parent, or two, or more. Every family is special."
Liam's eyes got big. "That is true!" he said. He turned to his new friend. "Does your mom cook for you?" The new girl smiled a little. "She makes the best soup in the whole world," she said.
"Does she read to you?" asked Liam. "Every single night," said the new girl. Now she was grinning. "And she helps me zip my coat!" "See?" said Liam. "Your family has lots and lots of love. That is what makes a family special!"
The whole class cheered. Liam grabbed his new friend's hand, and they ran to the rug together. Big families, small families, silly families, quiet families—they were all wonderful. And that day, every kid in the class felt just right.
