Hana loved to dance in the kitchen. Every morning, she would spin and twirl on the bright checkered floor. The golden sunshine came through the window and made everything warm and happy. A little radio on the counter played soft music, and Hana danced along.
On the fridge, there were colorful magnets shaped like numbers. There was a red 1, an orange 2, a yellow 3, a green 4, a blue 5, and more! They usually stood in a neat row, like friends holding hands. But this morning, something was different.
The numbers were all mixed up! The 5 was next to the 1. The 3 was way up high, all alone. The 8 was down at the bottom, far from its friends. "Oh no!" said Hana. "Every number is lonely! They can't find their neighbors!"
Hana had an idea. "I know!" she said. "Every number has neighbors — one that comes before and one that comes after. I can help them find their friends!" She clapped her hands and began to dance. "Let's play a counting game!"
Hana found the red 1 first. "Hello, 1!" she said. "You are the very first number. You don't have a neighbor before you, but your neighbor after you is 2!" She slid the orange 2 right next to the 1. Hop, hop, slide! Hana danced as she counted. "1, 2!"
"Now let's find 2's other neighbor!" said Hana. She counted up from 2. "2... 3! The neighbor after 2 is 3!" She found the yellow 3 way up high and slid it into place. Twirl, twirl, slide! "1, 2, 3!" Hana sang as she danced.
Hana kept going! She found the green 4 hiding behind a picture magnet. "The neighbor before 4 is 3, and the neighbor after 4 is 5!" she said. She put 4 right between its friends. Spin, spin, slide! "3, 4, 5!" she counted.
"What comes after 5?" Hana asked. She counted up. "5... 6!" She found the purple 6 near the bottom of the fridge. "And what comes before 5?" She counted down. "5... 4! That's right, 4 is already there!" Shimmy, shimmy, slide!
Hana danced faster now! She found the pink 7 and the aqua 8. "6, 7, 8!" she sang. "7's neighbor before is 6, and 7's neighbor after is 8!" Every number was finding its friends. The fridge was looking better and better!
"Almost done!" said Hana. She found the silver 9 and the gold 10. "8, 9, 10!" she counted. "9's neighbor before is 8, and 9's neighbor after is 10! And 10 is the last one in our row!" Leap, leap, slide! All the numbers were in place!
Hana stepped back and looked at the fridge. All the numbers stood in a happy row, from 1 to 10. No number was lonely anymore! Every single one had a neighbor before it and a neighbor after it. "You all found your friends!" Hana cheered.
Hana turned up the little radio and did her biggest dance yet! She spun and hopped and twirled across the checkered floor. "Every number has neighbors!" she sang. "One before and one after!" Then she picked up a cookie shaped like a 5 and took a big, happy bite. What a sweet way to count!
