Jamal sat on his front porch on a warm, sunny afternoon. He loved quiet days like this. His potted plants swayed softly in the breeze. "What a nice day," said Jamal. "I think I will sit and think for a while."
Then something caught his eye. Tucked behind a pot of red flowers, something sparkled. Jamal reached down and picked it up. It was a magnifying glass, but not like any he had seen before. It glittered with tiny silver stars!
Jamal held the sparkly magnifying glass up to his eye and looked around. "Wow!" he said. The round pots on his porch began to glow! Circles were everywhere — the tops of the pots, the doorknob, even the big round sun in the sky. "Circles are round with no corners at all," said Jamal.
Jamal walked down the sidewalk toward the park. He held the sparkly magnifying glass up again. The sandbox began to glow! It was shaped like a big square. "A square has four sides that are all the same," said Jamal. He spotted more squares — the hopscotch tiles, and a window on the park shed.
Next, Jamal stopped by the colorful playground. He looked through the sparkly magnifying glass at the slide. The side of the slide was shaped like a triangle! It glowed bright. "A triangle has three sides and three corners," said Jamal. He saw triangles on the swings' frame too. "Triangles are strong shapes!"
Jamal walked past the pond and looked up. A kite floated in the sky above the park. Through the sparkly magnifying glass, a shape on the kite began to glow — a star! "A star has points that stick out," said Jamal. He counted them. "One, two, three, four, five points!"
"I found circles, squares, triangles, and stars!" said Jamal. He felt proud. He kept walking and soon saw the friendly little library at the end of the street. It had big round windows and a tall front door. But today, the door looked different.
The tall front door had a lock on it — but not a regular lock. It had four empty holes, each one a different shape. There was a circle hole, a square hole, a triangle hole, and a star hole. Four sparkly shape pieces sat on the step below. "It is a shape-lock puzzle!" said Jamal.
Jamal picked up the first sparkly shape piece. It was round with no corners. "This is a circle!" he said. He placed it in the circle hole. Click! Then he picked up the one with four equal sides. "This is a square!" Click! Jamal smiled. "I can do this."
He picked up the piece with three sides and three corners. "This is a triangle!" said Jamal. Click! Last was the piece with five points sticking out. "And this is a star!" Click! All four shapes glowed bright, and the tall front door slowly swung open.
Inside was the most wonderful room Jamal had ever seen. It was a cozy reading nook tucked behind the tall square bookshelves. Soft pillows shaped like circles, squares, triangles, and stars filled the nook. A small lamp gave off a warm glow. "This is perfect," whispered Jamal.
Jamal picked up a circle pillow and a good book. He settled in and began to read. The sparkly magnifying glass rested beside him. "Shapes are everywhere," he said softly. "You just have to look." And on that warm, quiet afternoon, Jamal had found the best shape of all — the shape of a perfect day.
