Ezra loved to read. Every day, he sat under his big oak tree on his soft, colorful blanket. The leaves above made dancing shadows on the grass. It was his favorite spot in the whole backyard.
But today, something was wrong. Ezra looked up from his book and gasped. His baskets of toys, his little bags of snacks, and his jars of bright buttons were all mixed up in one big, messy pile!
"Oh no!" said Ezra. "How will I find anything?" Toy cars were mixed with crackers. Buttons were stuck inside cups. It was a mess! Ezra scratched his head and thought hard.
Then Ezra smiled. "I know! I can sort them!" He clapped his hands. "I will put each thing in its own group. First, I will sort the toys. Then the snacks. Then the buttons!"
Ezra picked up the toys one by one. "Sort, sort, sort! Big to small, tall to short!" he sang. He put all the red toys in one row. Then the blue toys. Then the yellow toys. Three bright rows!
Next, Ezra sorted each row by size. The big red truck went first. Then a medium red ball. Then a tiny red car. "Look!" said Ezra. "Big, medium, small. That is a pattern!"
Now it was time for the snacks! "Sort, sort, sort! Big to small, tall to short!" Ezra sang again. He put the orange crackers together, the purple grapes together, and the green apple slices together.
Ezra lined up the snacks by size, too. The big crackers went first, and the little ones went last. "Another pattern!" said Ezra. He giggled and ate one tiny cracker as a treat.
Last came the buttons! Ezra poured them out of the jars. So many colors! He sorted the red buttons, the blue buttons, the green buttons, and the yellow buttons into four little piles.
"Sort, sort, sort! Big to small, tall to short!" Ezra sang. Then he found a surprise! All the red buttons were small, and all the blue buttons were big. "A hidden pattern!" said Ezra. "How cool!"
Ezra looked at everything he had sorted. Neat rows of toys. Tidy groups of snacks. Pretty piles of buttons. No more mess! "I did it!" said Ezra. He felt very proud.
Ezra put his things back into the baskets and jars, all nice and neat. Then he curled up on his soft, colorful blanket with his favorite book. He smiled. Sorting was just as fun as reading—especially when you find surprises hiding in the patterns!
