Mei loved to draw. Every day, she sat at her tiny wooden desk and filled her sketchbook with pictures. She drew silly cats, tall trees, and swirly rainbows. Drawing made Mei feel happy inside.
One morning, Mei walked into her classroom and stopped. Something new was on the rainbow-painted shelf! A row of small, glowing boxes sat in a line. Each one was covered in sparkly stars and swirly patterns that seemed to shimmer and dance in the light.
Mei reached for the first box. She tugged and pulled, but it would not open. She tried again. Nothing! Then she saw tiny gold words on the lid. They said: "Say the magic words to open me." What could the magic words be?
Mei thought and thought. Then she whispered, "Once upon a time, there was..." Click! The box popped open! Inside was a tiny, whimsical picture of a little lost dragon with big, sad eyes. The dragon looked like it needed a friend.
Mei sat down and began to draw the little dragon in her sketchbook. She gave it a cozy cave and a new friend — a brave mouse! But then she stopped. "What if my story is not good enough?" she said softly. She felt shy inside.
Mei looked at the shelf. The second box was glowing brighter now, as if it was calling to her. She took a deep breath and said, "Once upon a time, there was..." Click! This box opened too! Inside was a tiny picture of a fish dancing in a top hat.
Mei laughed. A dancing fish! That was so silly! She picked up her crayon and drew the fish splashing in a puddle, doing a funny jig. She made up a story about it. "The fish danced in the rain and made all the frogs clap!" Mei smiled. This story was fun!
Now Mei felt braver. She ran to the third box and said the magic words loud and clear. "Once upon a time, there was..." Click! Inside was a tiny picture of a cloud that was giggling! Little ha-ha-ha's floated out of the box like bubbles.
Mei drew the giggling cloud in her sketchbook. She gave it a big smile and fluffy arms. In her story, the cloud tickled the sun and made it sneeze out shooting stars! "I did it!" said Mei. "I made three whole stories!" Her heart felt big and proud.
Mei's friends gathered around. "Can we see?" they asked. Mei took a deep breath. She held up her sketchbook and read her stories out loud. The lost dragon found a friend. The fish danced in the rain. The cloud tickled the sun! Her friends clapped and cheered. "More! More!" they said.
Then Mei saw one last box on the shelf. It glowed the brightest of all. She said, "Once upon a time, there was..." Click! The box opened. But this time, it was empty inside! Mei looked closer. On the bottom, tiny gold words said: "This one is for YOU to fill."
Mei smiled at her friends. "Let's fill it together!" she said. Everyone grabbed crayons and paper. They drew flying turtles, singing flowers, and a moon that liked to skip rope. The empty box filled up with wonderful ideas. And Mei learned something important — every idea, big or small, can become a wonderful tale. All you have to say is... "Once upon a time, there was..."
