Jamal loved quiet afternoons. He liked to sit under a big tree and play chess all by himself. He would think and think before he moved each piece. "I like to take my time," Jamal would say. One sunny day, a sparkly ticket floated down from the sky and landed right on his chessboard.
The ticket said: "Come to the Big and Small Circus! Fun for all sizes!" Jamal smiled. He walked down a winding path until he saw the biggest tent he had ever seen. It had bright red-and-yellow stripes, sparkling lights, and a tall pointed top that reached toward the clouds. "Wow," said Jamal. "That is one BIG tent."
Inside the tent, the sawdust-covered ring sparkled under bright lights. A silly ringmaster stood in the middle. He wore a tall purple top hat and a long shiny coat with gold buttons. "Welcome, welcome!" he shouted. "I am the ringmaster of the Big and Small Circus! Let the show begin!"
Two animals marched into the ring. First came an enormous elephant with big floppy ears. Then came a teeny-tiny mouse with a curly pink tail. The ringmaster pointed at the little mouse and said, "Here is our TALLEST animal!" Then he pointed at the huge elephant and said, "And here is our SHORTEST one!" The crowd giggled.
Jamal shook his head slowly, just like he did when he spotted a tricky chess move. He walked right into the ring. "Wait," said Jamal in his calm voice. "Let me look at them side by side." He stood next to the elephant and then next to the mouse. "The elephant is TALLER," said Jamal. "The mouse is SHORTER. See? You mixed them up!"
The ringmaster scratched his head under his tall purple top hat. "Oh my!" he said. "Are you sure?" Jamal nodded. "When two things stand side by side, you can compare them. The elephant is BIGGER. The mouse is SMALLER. That is how you tell!" The mouse squeaked and the elephant trumpeted as if to agree.
Next, a tall giraffe walked into the ring. Her long neck peeked right over the curtains! Behind her waddled a short little penguin. The ringmaster laughed and said, "This penguin is TALLER than the giraffe!" Jamal smiled. "Let's see about that," he said quietly.
Jamal looked up at the giraffe. He looked down at the penguin. "The giraffe is TALLER," he said. "The penguin is SHORTER. The giraffe is also BIGGER. The penguin is also SMALLER." The ringmaster blinked. "You are very good at this comparing thing!" he said. Jamal grinned. "I just take my time and look carefully."
Then two fluffy poodles trotted into the ring. They had matching pink bows and curly white fur. They stood side by side, nose to nose and tail to tail. The ringmaster scratched his chin. "Um... which one is taller?" he asked. Jamal knelt down and looked very carefully.
"They are the same size!" said Jamal. "When two things are the same height, we say they are EQUAL. Equal means they match!" The two poodles wagged their tails and spun in happy circles. "Equal!" repeated the ringmaster. "I like that word! Equal, equal, equal!" He danced around the ring, and everyone laughed.
Now the ringmaster wanted to try. He lined up all the animals from shortest to tallest. "The mouse is the SMALLEST," he said. "Then the penguin. Then the poodles—they are EQUAL! Then the elephant. And the giraffe is the TALLEST!" Jamal clapped his hands. "You got it!" he cheered.
The whole circus tent erupted in cheers. "Hooray for Jamal's Big and Small Show!" everyone shouted. Jamal took a little bow. He was calm and happy, just the way he liked to be. As he walked home with his sparkly ticket in his pocket, he whispered, "Taller, shorter, bigger, smaller, equal." And he smiled all the way back to his chessboard.
