Kai loved the ocean more than anything. Every sunny morning, he ran to the beach with his surfboard under his arm. The golden sand was warm on his feet. The gentle waves said hello with a soft splash, splash, splash!
Kai paddled out on his surfboard and rode a wave. Up and down, up and down! The salty wind blew through his hair. "This is the best day ever!" Kai said with a big grin.
Then Kai heard something new. Chug, chug, chug! Toot, toot! A magical train rolled along the shoreline! It sparkled and shimmered in the sunlight. Its wheels were made of glittering seashells that left swirly tracks in the sand.
Kai splashed out of the water and ran to see. The train had four cars, and each one was a different color—yellow, blue, red, and orange. A rainbow-colored engine puffed little clouds shaped like stars. "All aboard the Feelings Train!" called a friendly voice.
Kai climbed into the first car. It was bright yellow inside, like sunshine! Everything glowed warm and golden. Kai felt a big smile spread across his face. His heart felt light, like a bubble floating up, up, up! "I feel so good!" Kai said.
"That feeling is called happy," said the friendly voice. "Happy is when your heart feels warm and full, like the sun on a summer day." Kai giggled. "I like feeling happy!" he said. "Happy, happy, happy!"
Kai stepped into the next car. This one was blue, like the deep, deep sea. Kai felt his smile get smaller. His eyes felt a little watery. He thought about the time his sandcastle washed away. "My tummy feels heavy," Kai said quietly.
"That feeling is called sad," said the friendly voice. "Sad is when your heart feels heavy, like a shell sinking in the water. And that is okay." Kai took a deep breath. "It is okay to feel sad sometimes," he said softly. And just like that, the heaviness got a little lighter.
The next car was red, like a hot sunset. Kai felt his hands squeeze tight. His face got warm. He remembered when someone kicked over his sand fort. "I feel all stormy inside!" Kai said, stomping his foot.
"That feeling is called angry," said the friendly voice. "Angry is when you feel hot and stormy, like big waves crashing on the rocks. It is okay to feel angry. You can take a deep breath and let the storm pass." Kai breathed in slowly and blew out like the wind. The stormy feeling got calmer.
The last car was orange, bright and fizzy like a soda pop! Kai felt his whole body wiggle. His toes tapped. His fingers danced. He wanted to jump and spin! "I feel like I could fly!" Kai shouted. "That feeling is called excited!" said the friendly voice. "Excited is like a wave that lifts you up, up, up!"
Kai hopped off the Feelings Train and ran back to the ocean. He looked out at all the waves—big ones, small ones, gentle ones, and strong ones. "Every wave is part of the sea," Kai said. "And every feeling is part of me! Happy, sad, angry, excited—they are all okay." And with a big, brave smile, Kai grabbed his surfboard and rode the next wave home.
