Liam loved to run fast and laugh loud. He lived on a bright, sunny street with colorful houses and tall green trees. Every day, he would zoom up and down the cobblestone road, giggling the whole way.
One morning, Liam heard something new. Boom, boom, boom! Music floated down the street. Drums thumped. Horns tooted. "What is that sound?" said Liam. He jumped up and ran to see.
A parade! A long line of animals marched down the cobblestone road. Striped cats strutted proudly. Spotted dogs stomped their paws. Fluffy ducks waddled and quacked. Fluttering banners waved above them, and confetti swirled all around.
Liam watched the animals march. Cat, dog, duck. Cat, dog, duck. They marched in the same order, over and over again. "Hey!" said Liam. "They are making a pattern! Cat, dog, duck. Cat, dog, duck!"
Liam laughed his loud laugh. "Ha ha ha! I want to march too!" He ran to the parade and started stomping his feet. Stomp, stomp, stomp! He marched right alongside the fluffy ducks.
But then Liam saw something strange. There was a gap in the parade! After a striped cat and a spotted dog, there was an empty spot. No one was there. The pattern was broken!
"Oh no!" said Liam. "Someone is missing!" He scratched his head and thought hard. "The pattern goes cat, dog, duck. Cat, dog, duck. There is a cat. There is a dog. So what comes next?"
"DUCK!" shouted Liam. "A fluffy duck comes next! The pattern tells me so! Cat, dog, DUCK!" He looked around and saw a fluffy duck sitting by the road, looking a little lost.
"Come on, little duck!" said Liam. "You belong right here!" He gently led the fluffy duck to the empty spot. The duck quacked happily and waddled into place. Cat, dog, duck! The pattern was fixed!
Now the parade was complete! Cat, dog, duck. Cat, dog, duck. Cat, dog, duck. Every animal was in the right place. Liam clapped his hands. "Patterns help you predict what comes next!" he said.
The animals cheered! The striped cats meowed. The spotted dogs barked. The fluffy ducks quacked. They wanted Liam to lead the parade! So Liam marched to the very front, stomping and laughing all the way.
Liam led the silly parade all through town. He stomped his feet and laughed his loudest laugh. And whenever he saw a pattern after that—in colors, shapes, or sounds—he always knew what came next. "Cat, dog, duck!" he giggled. "Patterns are everywhere!"
