Kai loved the ocean more than anything. Every sunny morning, he ran down to the bright beach with his surfboard under his arm. The golden sand was warm on his toes. The turquoise waves rolled in, one after another, calling him to play.
Kai paddled out and rode a big wave. Splash! The water sparkled all around him. "This is the best day!" Kai said with a grin. He loved how the ocean made him feel so free.
When Kai came back to shore, he saw something strange. A colorful parade was marching along the beach! Three big, funny shapes bounced and wobbled on the golden sand. "What is that?" Kai asked, tilting his head.
The first shape was tall and bright red. It bounced up and down like a pogo stick. "Hi! Hi! Hi!" it cheered. "I am an exclamation mark! I go at the end of exciting sentences! But I lost my place in a storybook!" Exclamation Mark looked worried.
The second shape had a big curl on top. It was purple and leaned to one side. "Do you know where we came from?" it asked softly. "I am a question mark. I go at the end of asking sentences. Can you help us?" Question Mark looked at Kai with hopeful eyes.
The third shape was small, round, and blue. It sat calmly on the sand. "I am a period," it said in a quiet voice. "I go at the end of a sentence to make it stop. Our storybook washed up on the beach. We fell right out of the pages." Period gave a little nod.
Kai saw the big storybook on the sand. Its pages were open, but the sentences looked wrong. Words sat there with no marks at the end. "I will help you!" said Kai. "Let's find where each of you belongs!" He picked up the storybook and smiled.
Kai read the first sentence out loud. "Wow, the wave is so big" He stopped. "That sounds exciting!" said Kai. "You go here, Exclamation Mark!" Exclamation Mark jumped to the end of the sentence. The words lit up in bright colors. "Wow, the wave is so big!" the book cheered.
Kai read the next sentence. "Where did the seashell go" He thought for a moment. "That sentence is asking something!" said Kai. "You go here, Question Mark!" Question Mark curled into place. The words shimmered like starlight. "Where did the seashell go?" the book whispered.
Kai found one more sentence. "The sun set over the calm sea" He read it slowly. "That sentence is done. It just needs a little stop," said Kai. "You go here, Period." Period rolled softly to the end. The words glowed warm and golden. "The sun set over the calm sea." The book gave a peaceful hum.
The storybook was whole again! Every sentence had its own voice. Exclamation marks cheer. Question marks ask. Periods pause. The pages danced with sound and color. "Thank you, Kai!" all three marks said together. "You gave us back our places!"
Kai set the storybook gently on the boardwalk bench, ready for its next reader. He grabbed his blue surfboard and ran back to the waves. "Every sentence has its own voice!" Kai called out happily. And that was the best thing he learned all day.
