Priya loved puzzles more than anything! She loved puzzles with shapes. She loved puzzles with numbers. And most of all, she loved puzzles with words. Today, Priya walked to the little train station at the edge of town. A sign on the station read "Story Town."
At the station, Priya found a shiny little train with rainbow-painted cars sitting on the track. But the train was not moving! A friendly conductor stood beside it, scratching his head. "Oh dear," said the conductor. "This train will not go!"
"What is wrong?" asked Priya. The conductor pointed to the train cars. "This is a sight word train," he said. "Each car needs a sight word to make the train go. Someone must read the words out loud!" Priya clapped her hands. "I can do that! I love words!"
Priya hopped aboard the first car. A big, bold word was painted on its side: "the." "The!" Priya read out loud. Chug, chug! The train moved forward just a little bit. "It worked!" cheered Priya.
Priya moved to the next car. "Is!" she read. Chug, chug! Then the next car: "And!" Chug, chug, chug! The train rolled faster now. The wheels turned, and the track curved past a big red barn. Friendly animals in the fields waved as the train went by.
"Can!" read Priya on the next car. Chug! "See!" she read on the one after that. Chug, chug! The train was really moving now! The wind blew through Priya's hair as the train zoomed along the winding track. "This is fun!" she laughed.
Two more cars came next. "My!" Priya read. Chug! "Like!" Chug, chug! Then she read one more: "Go!" The train zoomed even faster down the track. Priya giggled as the hills rolled by. Sight words were making the train move!
But then—screeeech! The train stopped at the bottom of a big hill. "Oh no!" said Priya. She looked ahead and saw one more car. But this car had no word on it! It was blank. "The train cannot go up the hill without all its words!" said the conductor.
Priya thought hard. This was a puzzle, and she loved puzzles! She looked at all the words she had read: the, is, and, can, see, my, like, go. "These words want to make a sentence," she said. "What word is missing?" She thought and thought.
"Can... go... see... my..." Priya whispered. Then her eyes lit up! "I know! The missing word is 'we!' We can go see my friends!" She shouted it proudly: "WE!" And just like that, the big, bold word "we" appeared on the blank car. It glowed bright and beautiful!
Chug, chug, chug, ZOOM! The train raced up the big hill and down the other side. It zoomed right into Story Town! At the station, all the words from the cars came together to make a sentence on a big, bright banner: "We can go see my friends!" Everyone in Story Town cheered!
Priya smiled the biggest smile. "Sight words are the little words that help big stories move forward!" she said. The conductor tipped his hat. "And you read every one!" Priya waved goodbye as the rainbow train chugged off to its next adventure. She could not wait to read more words tomorrow!
